Your two main choices are the Canon 18-200 and Tamron 18-270 PZD, but both are just under $600 new.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Tamron 18-270 and right now it is $550 brand new after the rebate (Tamron is pretty quick on their rebates). Understand there are compromises going to a one lens solution, in some cases you may find you lose some IQ. I've never shot this particular Tamron lens so I'm not familiar with its soft spots.

Get the Tamron. Tamrons are nice, i wouldve gotten the 17-50mm but got the nicer 17-55mm [albeit more expensive]

No offense, but if you only want one lens, why not buy a nice point and shoot?

Probably best to buy a second camera.

Perhaps he prefers the speed of an SLR.

for a couple of obvious reasons....i travel a lot and dont want to haul a ton of equipment amd like i said previously, i lose photo ops. i was out the other day and had my wide angle on and saw a dozen turkeys about 200 yards away and had to switch lens. by this time the turkeys heard the car and were getting on their way....

Get the prior version of the Tamron 18-270 VC, it is a bargain, the new version is not much better.

Photography is not defined by what gear you own.

OP - I am in the same boat as you are and prefer not to carry too much equip.

It's exactly as the OP said, I often miss the opportunity because switching lenses takes too long (even if it is only 15-20seconds).

OP- let us know what you go with :) and what the results are afterwards.

While the image quality of the 18-270 might not be quite that of more expensive 17-55 and 70-200 varieties, it's probably not all that far from the kit lens, and certainly is a convenient option to have. There's been a number of times where I'd be happy to trade the IQ for flexibility.

For such a large range, the 18-270 is also surprisingly compact and light too!

Yeah because the interchangeable lens is all a DSLR has over a P&S right

Tamrom 18-270 or the sigma 18-250 are your best options. The Sigma is a bit cheaper but the tamron seems to have better IQ. I personally owned the sigma and it was a great lens for what it was (an all in one zoom). But if I wanted another all in one lens I'd probably get the Tamron

Yes that is the latest one

That really wouldn't help him with the whole 'not wanting to change lenses' thing ;)

So you want to cover 18-250 with one lens.....Do you care about image quality? Are you going to be taking pictures indoors?

If you answered yes to either of those questions, then you aren't going to have much luck.

At $500-$600, a quality lens with a large focal range would be the Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6. You're going to have to use high ISO indoors, or use a flash, but it is probably the most versatile focal range that still produces great image quality that rivals some lenses that are nearly double the price.
