I love to do this, but I don't get to do much of it. I normally use a high grade flash light, but when I am painting with light I am normally higlighting landscape type thing. It helps to have a good long distance beam on the flashlight. Mainly I do it to bring out some details on things light night shots of covered bridges.

Its fun to play with, not sure how much it adds to the "art" of what I am doing. It might be more effective on car photography.
