Spoke to the salon owner this morning, she wants headshots for 15-20 employees, stills of the amenities of the salon and would like to do a video as well. I haven't done video before and don't know what to charge for something like that. Anyone have experience with shooting video and editing? What's a reasonable price? I quoted her a price of $200 per hour, which is going to be cheaper than if I itemized everything, so she's getting a discount for the fact that she's the boss of my brothers girlfriend.

So, for video, what's a good estimate of time, 1 hour shooting for about 1 or 2 minutes of spliced footage? Charge my normal shooting rates for that? Would editing be a lower charge?

Thanks!

About a year ago I spoke with a videographer who worked in the corporate arena and he was charging around $1500 per minute of delivered footage.

Before I jump on the bandwagon and say don;t do it, do you know what sort of video she is looking for?

I'm meeting with her on Wednesday to discuss. She mentioned something like a clip showing the salon off, like the ammenities, shots of both empty and in use with clients. What I see is panning the empty salon and slowly fade as I pan into a full salon with clients getting their hair done, etc.... end scene!

I'm going to charge them for my time, but I want to get an idea of what people charge to shoot and edit videos for future reference. Up to the shoot I will be practicing and shooting video at home.

You could easily loose the whole job if you try the video yourself. Get quotes from other video pros and mark it up 20%.

A couple of equipment questions :

Do you have the necessary lights to light the scene - video indoors needs a lot of continuous light.

Do you have a fluid (video) head for your tripod.

I will rent the lights if necessary. I'm going to take my camera with me on Wednesday when I meet with her to do a few test shots and a test clip.

I bought this last night:

1-2 minutes of editing is not hard at all, just be thankful its not a 30 minute infomercial...

It wouldn't take more than an hour, find the clips you want, add some fancy transitions, royalty free music and a voice over. I usually charge for the time it took to edit, the length of the video is subjective, they could want some crazy after effects or greenscreen work and still be only 60 seconds long.

For someone who has never done a video before, that''s going to take more than an hour.

At this point, you're talking about three different specialties: Business portraits, interior photography, and videography, none of which you have professional experience in. Do you really want to mess up with the boss of your brother's girlfriend?

I've done headshots before, I've done interior shots before, so I'm comfortable with those. I just haven't done the video before, professionally that is. I have done some slight video editing and splicing on some home videos I did years ago using Pinnacle Pro and a DV camcorder. Talk about a pain in the butt to convert to digital! Anyway, I've already started practicing shooting video this morning. Got Adobe Premiere loaded up on my computer and will start playing around with that. As Dooms_Day said, it's not an infomercial, just a quick spot to highlight the amenities of the salon.

Where's a good place to get royalty-free music? I've already been planning in my head how I want to do this. thanks!

how long of a video does the client want?

30 seconds for a local TV commercial?

1 minute for an extended TV commercial?

3 minutes for a viral video or something on their website?

30 minutes to use as a training video?

Each of the above situations would have a different price attached to it. Without understanding the client expectations, you can't expect to give a price.
