Whats with it?

Does it only affect the sensor when taking videos, or pictures too?

Killjoy demonstrated using a laser gun sight (similar to this (external link)) to assist with auto focus at night. We were at the POTN meetup at DwightMcCanns. I tried to focus in the dark on a fence about 20 feet away and my 40D wouldn't even try to auto focus. Killjoy pointed the laser on the fence panel and the camera locked in right away. Not something I need enough to spend $40.00 on but a very neat trick for anyone doing low light photography.

Yea I have heard a lot of horror stories about lasers hitting sensors and frying them. Best advice is to just avoid them.

Tom that laser assisted focusing is something I have never heard of and really interesting.

There has been some discussion about using a laser to focus in low light in other threads:

and specifically:

Just make sure the laser is pointed away from the camera, just like your eyes, don't look into where the light is actually coming from!

Direct exposure to the sensor is bad! Especially high powered lasers like mine. Blue(appears purple here) one is 1000mW, red is 250mW and Green is 100mW. Even fraction of second exposure will damage the sensor.
Just to give idea... a cheap regular red laser pointer is rated 1 to 5mW. I light my cig with my blue laser.
