I'm starting to play around with my 580ex and would like to experiment with more off-camera flash photography. I got a small set of modifiers, and I have a short/long ETTL cord on the way.

But I am not sure what I want / need for a stand.

Actually, I know I need a stand, but do I need boom, bases, swivels, etc etc.? I can't even tell if my 508ex will mount on a stand like the Manfrotto MA1004BAC without other "stuff". Can I point the flash in different directions with that stand, or do I need a boom for that?

Looking for "relatively" simple for indoor / outdoor, to support 580ex, small softbox. But I do need to be able to aim the light.

What do I need?

(Sorry to sound dumb. I went through this same confusion when I got my tripod/head.)

In addition to the stand you will need an umbrella adapter.

and a cold shoe with a stud.
