I don't have a pic but a video... ... but this was for mentoring program that I did and was held at a friend's garage.... and it perfectly shows that it works .

I have a portable studio but no space at home to set it up to play with.

Just finished adding a temporary black ceiling to my studio.


I have finished creating THE CAVE...

It is much darker than shown in the images in reality.

I used a black muslin backdrop, some brackets, bungee cord and hooks and a tarpaulin ring and punch set to create my holes.

Mrs Austen would let me paint the garage in the new house any colour I wanted to, but there would be a "cost" if I was to choose black.

If I must, I guess I'm prepared to were that cost, but for someone like me, who does now at least normally remember to remove the lens cap, would grey be that much of a hindrance ?

I like the "White is better as it gives a softer light / more fill" type argument, but I can also understand Robs "Black is better, you can control all your light" argument.

So is grey a wife-friendly, photographically-acceptable compromise ?

One thought to consider...you could go with the gray to reduce the uncontrollable bounce from white and keep the peace with the wife. But if you find that you want the total control of black, you could buy black fabric and rig a system to hang it directly in front of the walls. Scroll back a bit and there is even an example of this for the ceiling. Sure it would be a bit more setup and takedown, but it might be a good solution. I mean, it's a garage, so the mounting hardware could be permanent and still not look too bad when you're not set up for shooting.

I have a good wife too ! BUT .... she hates to get in front of the camera, thus my need for Ms. Plastic.

I'm in almost the same shape. My wife said she would model for me, but she always seems to have "more important" things to do. I'll never get rid of her so I got a compromise Ms. Plastic: I just got a wig manequin (head) and rigged the neck with quick change plate for one of my cheap tripods. I still try to practice with my wife whenever she gives me the chance, but it is nice to have "Heady" to try out things and get set-up so I can maximize my time with a live model.
