Went around on the strip last night and snapped some pics. Came out with some good ones.

thanks! this shot primarily benefits from split toning in Lightroom, to give it a 'cross processing' kind of feel. here is one of the frames as it appears SOOC - this is with WB on "Auto" - you can surely get a better WB SOOC by using one of the other WB settings or by setting a custom one, but I prefer correcting it manually in post, for two reasons: 1) it saves me the hassle (time and effort) of having to find the best WB while on the field, and 2) I prefer having complete customization control over it in post, so there's really no reason for me to have it done as best as I can while on the field.

here is the custom Lightroom preset (I created it):
nightCP (external link)

That's about all I did on it, I didn't do much in Photoshop.

Regarding settings, the exposures vary greatly since you are dealing with varying lighting with the sky and such, being a panoramic stitch. I use the exposure meter to find the optimal. FOR THE ABOVE SHOT, I used the following:

Lens: EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Image Date: 2012-01-15 17:15:19 -0600
Focal Length: 24.0mm
Focus Distance: 4294967295.00m
Aperture: f/10.0
Exposure Time: 20.000 s
ISO equiv: 100
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
White Balance: Auto

Here is one of the frames that has sky in it, with the Lightroom setting in place:
QUOTED IMAGE

Not sure exactly why but this one is at f/2.8 - I would have liked to keep the same aperture for all the shots, I probably just messed up. But as you can see as long as you use the exposure meter, it's ok. This shot has an exposure of 0.8s. If you have any other questions let me know.

Thanks doc! I have been to both DC and Boston in the past with my 5D and enjoyed both cities immensely! Although I have learned a great deal since both of those trips and could certainly be more efficient and productive with photos if I were to visit again.

thanks, please see above.

srika,

Can you please explain how to load that preset into LR? It looks like a script file but I'm not sure how to go about using it.

BTW - you do absolutely beautiful work! And, like a previous poster, I'd love to see you in other cities - Washington, NYC, Boston, etc. You could put a whole book together...........

Thanks! btw just to be clear, this preset is for PC, I don't think it'll work on Mac. To use it on PC, save the file and then copy it to the following folder (make sure Lightroom is closed before you do this):

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Develop Presets\User Presets

Change USERNAME to your specific username.

Once you have done this, you can open Lightroom, go into develop, and then you will see "nightCP" on the User Preset list (scroll down to the bottom).

Thanks much, I would love to go to other cities, just need to find a way! I am working on it. Currently I am working on selling large scale metal prints to higher end clients. If that goes through as planned, then you will see me doing more traveling!

Oh also, I will be in Las Vegas in March and LA in June. So some good photo ops there.

oh I am working on a few Chicago books on Blurb right now, along with one for India. Stay tuned!

Thanks for sharing the info on your presets. When you are in Vegas, let me know if you want to and we can go out shooting together. I am meeting a few POTNers in a fortnight, it's always fun.

By the way, do you usually shoot these highrise shots from the terrace or through your hotel room window glass or some other way? The only highrises in Vegas happen to be casinos and none allow anybody to go to the terrace to my knowledge.
