Hey guys,
I was wondering what I would gain if I were to upgrade from an 85 1.8 to the 135L. What I'm worried about is the focal length being too long.

Why wonder? Get cheap 135 MF from ebay. Try it, if 135mm is OK go for L. It is one of the best primes.
I tried it with cheap 135 MF, didn't liked 135 mm, 85 1.8 has some issues with blue on max apperture.
Find 100mm to be perfect for me. Indoors included.

Having had the 135L as a rental for 4 days, it's definitely on my wish list. Love that thing. Focusses so quickly and my god is it ever sharp!

It's tight though. Really is a specific use lens. 85 is more versatile, but the 135 is so nice.

Indoor shooting was my main concern, but I was thinking of getting a 50 1.8 for indoor uses.

Remember that you'll get very shallow DoF when using f1.8 - much of the time I find it unusable and I have to stop it down. Then I start getting into the territory of other more versatile lenses. And if you want to use f1.8 because of low light levels, this is the time the nifty fifty has most trouble focussing.

For interior available light use I find I use the Tamron 28-75 far more often, and when I use added light (eg. a speedlight) then I generally use my 24-105 f4.0.

I use my nifty fifty most often when extreme shallow DoF is my target, not a side effect. And that isn't very often, and usually in bright light.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

Nice Sky! Only thing distracting is the OOF roof on the far left. Did you try a crop with that removed? Was there enough of the cityscape remaining?

I am at a bit of a cross road right now as to what I should be getting. I am most likely going to end up selling my 7D tomorrow and from the sale proceeds of that, I could either purchase a 5dc or buy a brand new 5dmkii. If I buy that 5dc (15k clicks), I could afford to buy the canon 50mm f/1.4 lens. If I buy the mkii, I would have to chip in extra money. The alternate option is to wait for the 5dmkiii to be release and see how much they go for and how much the release of mkiii will push the price down for the mkii.

Choices choices….

Does anyone have suggestions?

I mainly take portrait photos of my children’s.
