Yeah. I'm pretty proud of this lens and wrote a review on Adorama where I got it as well as here. Mine was perfect right out of the box. I is a little softer at f2.8 but only if you're zooming in to about 75% or so.

Hey, fellow Hoosier!

I have had all of the mid priced lenses with good reps and this one is my favorite. Although I really liked the Tamron 28-75. I have the same thoughts on this 17-70 as you do. It could be sharper on the wide open end when zooming. I just love this lenses versatility and thought I would miss a constant 2.8 f, but don't.

Ain't nothin but a thing.

I have been looking at tons of pictures @ 100% on flickr over the past two days and I really don't see much of a difference between this lens and the canon 15-85 sharpness wise. I think I might just pick one of these up to replace my kit lens. At the very least it should out perform the kit lens quite handily.

I have both. The sigma when shot at comparable focal lengths and apertures is nearly every bit as sharp. If you zoom down to pixel level you can start to see the difference but that's like viewing a 40x60 image or something nutty like that. Having both, I use my Sigma much more because of the "macro" capability and extra stop. The Canon stays on my backup.

Thanks kfreels. I don't doubt the canon 15-85 is great - but this lens interests me a bit more than the 15-85 :) Hopefully I'll be able to pick one up soon.

That was gone in HOURS. They can't keep anything in stock! I hope they don't start jacking the prices up just because of how quickly everything is selling.
