After ordering the lens from B&H on a Sunday at around 5PM, the lens showed up at my doorstep in Canada on Tuesday right around dinner time.

Mostly spent some time shooting around the house for now. First observation is that 1.4 is much more useable on the 35L than my 50. Mainly due to the softness of the 50.

My only real gripe so far is that the autofocus is not as good as I expected from an L lens. Being my first L lens, I guess I did not know what to expect, however I expected more. Definitely hunts a lot in low light, especially with the focus points other than the middle one. Not really a show-stopper because I usually focus and recompose anyways.

Trust me any lens you get is going to hunt in low light. This and the 24L are both faster (in terms of AF) than the 50L and the sloooow 85L. The 24L has the fastest AF of all of them. But for an L lens unless you're going for a telephoto lens expect AF to not be that fast in low light. Actually no lens will be fast in low light. But once you get used to this lens you'll love it ;)

And also comment above,

My 35L does not hunt in low light at all. It might be your Camera 30D rather than your lens.

I used my 35L both on 5dmk ii and 50D and there was difference between the two bodies for AF.

I am actually surprise that people commenting on 35L for the AF. Maybe, expectation was really high?

YMMV, but I really dont see AF problem on my 35L and 24L (I sold that lens.....and certainly love to have it back).

Good luck.

Oh, it's by no means a huge issue. I guess I just expected something slightly better? I am sure I will love it, hell I already do!

I wouldn't be surprised the 30D could be part of the issue. The camera is now (yikes!) 6 years old.

My guess s it's the camera...focus is quick and accurate on my MK2 and even faster on my 7D
