With all the b*tching and screaming going on about the 24-70 Mk II pricing, it seems like most people are waiting for more reviews before making a decision...especially with Tamron releasing a VC version the day before.

That being said, initial reviews have stated this is a phenomenal lens that rivals the 70-200 f/2.8 IS Mk II...a lens that some have replaced their beloved primes with.

So I'm wondering, how many people have already pre-ordered the new 24-70 Mk II? :)

The lens is priced extremely high. I am keeping my mk1 which is sharp "enough"!

$16xx to $17xx might be an acceptable price point to me, but there's no way I am paying twice that of the mk1 for the new version. Afterall, they even took some weight out of the mk2 and yet they have the audacity to price it higher!! :)

I think there are 2 reasons why we will see a rash of MKII versions of current lenses being released. One is the new and improved aspect (to be determined), secondly, they need to raise their prices due to the rising yen and coming out with a "new" lens, and the sticker shock, is more acceptable than just raising the prices of their current lenses.

On the positive side, it does protect owners of current lenses from eroding used prices.

For the price they are asking it better be as good or better than the 70-200 MKII.

A great opportunity for third parties to come out with their own releases.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I placed an order on day 1 but canceled it yesterday. Although it sounds like exactly what I need, Ive never been an early adopter of anything and ended up having a hard time stomaching the day 1 price premium and going in blind with no reviews. Ill wait a few months for the price to come down a bit and/or have some reviews available.

Plus, I decided to send my dog away for some bird work with a pro for a month which Ill get far more enjoyment out of once hunting season rolls around.

For some reason, I really think that Canon didn't want to put the 2nd version at that price, but had no choice because: 1.) the Yen is sooo strong 2.) They can't put out a version 2 without improving it with better glass/IQ (and that means money).

If the Yen-to-U.S. Dollar exchange rate was still 115:$1, you can bet that the version 2 would be much cheaper.

i probably would put my self on the list or at least buy when it is out in the store's however i have a trip planned to France in April and a few other necessities to take care of this year so at least it will be early next year before i upgrade to the new lens, hopefully by then the prices will have dropped the way they did with the 70-200 mkII. i also plan to buy the next gen 5D at the same time.

regards
bob

I have the 24-105 and it is IS. Any idea why the new 24-70 is not IS? Is there a focal point where Canon will include IS, below which they don't bother?
