is that red dot for looks only? dont really see why you would need it.

It's for getting birds in flight. Worth it's weight in gold.

Canon 70-200 F/2.8 IS

Bought it three months after buying my first digital camera, Rebel XT, about 6 years ago. Needed capability to take photos of dance competitions from the back of the auditorium w/o flash. Awesome lens for that, but camera body was limited.
Second was the 24-70 f/2.8 a few months later. Few thousand photos, and four years later, finally upgraded body to 50D.

All Canon 5D MKIII, 7D MKII, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 70-200mm f/2.8 ISL, 100-400mm MKII, EF 2X MKIII, EF 1.4 MKII

17-40 and I only had a 7D at the time. I shot Nikon up until 2008 so had no use for the early L lenses. I chose the 17-40 for the 7D because I tended to shoot in that range most of the time. I still own it and will probably never sell it, it's extremely sharp and is handy to have since I own three Canon bodies.
