I prefer to have my own domain. All smugmug sites are not yours. Smugmug controles it and smugmug owns it. Your title site has been forwarded to smugmug and that means you have very little change to get seo ranking. When I do a google search for some name, a name.smugmug.com will not show up.
These sites are good for storing pictures and letting your friends and family know where they can find your pictures. But when you want a business site, you better start having your own domain and a related email address. It's all about keywording your images, getting the right meta data in there, and having links to your site/photos posted in blogs and forums like POTN. All of these things are done by the user and that's what really makes a difference with SEO.

I have my own domain and a non-Smugmug website. I created a sub-domain for my Smugmug site. Smugmug doesn't own my site, domain or the sub-domain....I DO. ;)
