Couldn't resist any longer - ordered it (Rokinon) from amazon.ca, will decide later if I want to keep both it and my Sigma 10-20mm.

I looked it up - Magic Lantern allows you to preview the defished version of the photo with this lens on canon cameras, live. Should be very helpful when composing shots with defishing in mind. If you don't know about magic lantern - google for it. It enables dozens of features not provided by Canon - focus stacking, multi-shot HDR, even full HD video on my 50D (which officially doesn't support video).

So my new question is - what is the quality of de-fished photos made with Samyang? Is it comparable to Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6?

I bought that Sigma after falling in love with Samyang. Didn't find it using that much so kept Samyang and sold Sigma. Now have 12-24mm for FF, but still don't use it all that much.
Here are some defished photos using PTLens.

Thanks for the examples! Great photos by the way! Any full-resolution ones, for pixel-peeping?

I noticed that your shots are not 100% rectilinear - was it on purpose, or that's the best PTlens can do?

I downloaded a Lightroom (ACR) lens profile for Samyang defishing from the web, will give it a try.

I'll do a thorough side by side testing/comparison of Samyang (straight and defished) and Sigma 10-20, and will probably post here a short review.

The only serious limitation of Samyang (compared to Sigma 10-20) is that it doesn't accept filters. I'm sure I'll miss the ability to do wide angle daytime long exposure shots (I'm using ND110 filter - paid >100$).

Seems like this wee lens is never off my 7D lately, here are a few more from some of my weekly walks along the beach while my daughter goes to her highland dance class:

Yes, you are right, some shots are not 100% rectilinear. PTLens doesn't defish automatically. Rather, it allows user to adjust it the way it wants. Naturally, the more you defish it, the more you lose FOV.

To me fish eye effect is "Love it or leave it" phenomenon.

I personally love it and have no problem to show the distortion but when hating it , you can always keep the camera parallel to horizon i.e. no up or down tilt and you get a good distortion free at least in horizon that is of concern for most people, so by pass the post processing.

Exception to rule is architecture photography and please excuse my nastiness, Mother-in-law photo that I actually call this lens MIL portrait lens for obvious effect. Well she hates me unconditionally with or without fisheye portrait of her:)

Just got mine. I am doings some testing, comparing this lens to my Sigma 10-20mm. At the center, the resolution of Sigma is slightly better at f=3.5...11, and Samyang is better at f=16, 22. At the edge, I need to do more testing, but it does look that Samyang is rather soft, so stretching it making a rectilinear image results in unacceptable blurred edges. Oh well. I'll probably end up keeping both these lenses.

Chromatic aberrations are strong with Samyang, but I found that the Lightroom (Adobe Camera Raw) profile which can be downloaded here (external link) does a good job in both removing CA and (optionally) converting the photo to the rectilinear projection (de-fishing); it also fixes the vignetting. This profile is for Canon 7D. I edited the file - replaced all "7D" with "50D", changed the pixel resolution to the 50D's one, and also set the SensorFormatFactor to the 50D's one - 1.579033 (got it from a standard 50D lens profile). From my tests (at least for f/8), I get slightly better CA removal when I also set Fix Red/Cyan Fringe in ACR to -8. Vignetting in the profile is an overkill at f/8; it looks the best when set to 50% of the profile value. I put this profile in this folder (Win XP): J:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0\Samyang\Canon (I created the Samyang/Canon folders myself), and named it Canon 50D (Samyang 8mm fisheye) - RAW.lcp . It is interesting that ACR automatically detects that the RAW file is from Samyang - perhaps this profile is set up to be a default one for RAW files without lens ID in the EXIF; as Samyang is my only manual lens, this suites me perfectly.

Setting Profile distortion to 0% in ACR results in only CA and vignetting corrections applied, without any photo distortions - great if you need a fisheye photo; setting it to ~100% converts the photo to rectilinear projection; setting it in-between results in intermediate distortions. Very convenient.

I also tested the Magic Lantern live defishing feature (designed specifically for Samyang 8mm) - it works pretty well, so it should be very useful if you plan to frame photos with defishing in mind. I noticed that they use somewhat different de-fishing algorithm from the one used in the ACR profile, so framing is not 100% accurate.

Here are a few test shots, processed in ACR with the above profile. In the first one, I boosted saturation a lot, so any CA would be very obvious, but it is practically invisible.
