I find it hard to believe there's a great picture you couldn't have taken with the 24-70 that you could have taken had you the 24-70 II

Having said that......

It'll be a huge boost for event photographers shooting with crop cameras. The 7D's resolution was really pushing the capabilities of the original 24-70.

24-70mm on crop gives an equivalent angle of view of 38-112mm on full frame, which is almost the perfect range for indoor events. On 1.3x crop, it's 31-91mm, which is also almost perfect. At present, there's no way to replicate this on full frame with a single lens.

Exactly, you either need to accompany it with ginormous 70-200 F2.8, 85mm prime, or trade IQ and faster aperture with smooth bokeh for 24-105L.

It's nice to hear that all the issue of Mark I is fixed :D

We wont know for sure until it hits mass-market whether the field curvature has been taken care of.

MTF looks promising in this regard.

As I understand it, all lenses create an image that is not "flat" on the image sensor. This causes the edges to be soft. Corrections can be added to the elements but it is never perfect.

Actually, it causes the edges to be sharp... just not on a plane :)
E.g. The center is sharp at 3 meters, the corners are sharp at 10 meters. The actual shape of this function may be very complex, depending on lens design.

This is usually not ideal for landscape, but may be a non-issue or even a "feature" for portraits.
And this is another reason why most Internet test sites should be taken with a big grain of salt.

I saw the apology note from Canon that said it would be delayed until mid July.

Anyone got any info?

I had it on pre-order back in June and Canon announced the ship date had slipped to September. I saw someone claiming September/October timeframe. We're getting close. I wonder what created the delay.
