I don't know about this "disassembled, painted, and then reassembled to look like a Canon L lens!" Painting doesn't worry me, taking these things apart and putting them back together isn't something I'm comfortable with for a cosmetic change. I like the end result, it's different.

^- Well I'd personally kill to have my 70-200 with a black finish vs a white one :/ The white finish DOES cause problems sometimes

^^ yea i agree to have the white lens as black would look nice and more stealth.. but i too worry about taking the lens apart just to paint it.

Yes, they do attract attention (sometimes unwanted), but they are white to help reduce the heat gain of the lens, so its not always a bad thing, though it really depends on what you shoot and how often you are in the California desert shooting an off-road race, etc.

Exactly, i dont say that the white paint is bad in all situations, and heck i left my camera out when i was working one time so when i took a break i could shoot birds (with the 100-400 i owned) and i went to grab it and was quite happy the lens was white..The camera body itself was burning my hands...

But then again, the white paint on the 100-400 meant that birds could see it from a mile away, i could get physically closer to them with the 50-500 OS (as in, me being physically a few steps closer, The extra 100mm didnt hurt of course)

Also got the cops called on me before for the 100-400...

As for the lenscoats, the 100-400 one wasnt very practical, im considering one for the 70-200 however

Please explain this one further. I'm gonna run with either:

a) Concerned parent with young children nearby
or
b) Legally blind, morally crusading, anti-terrorist octogenarian

Am I close?

B I think, Either i guess is a possibility

Thankfully I got a fairly nice cop(We have some that are NOT so nice and who might have arrested me for not having identification on me, Look, I dont live in **** Germany, i'm out for a walk in MY NEIGHBORHOOD FFS, I shouldnt -have- to carry my ID at all times...) who confronted me about it after following me around, Some of the cops here are less so, They sent 5 police cruisers however and they were driving around the neighborhood afterwards...

The only thing i think i mighta done that was wrong was wandered onto someones front lawn just a bit to get a better angle on a bird...

I'd like custom colors. I'm thinking florescent green.

The white Nikon lens made me laugh out loud....clearly the owner wants people to think they are shooting with Canon.
