The sigma is pretty much as good as the canon 17-55, so yes.

The Sigma 17-50 is a top-shelf lens.

I bought both the 17-50 and the 17-55 to test (going to send one back). I am having trouble distinguishing between the two sets of photos as I'm going through them. So yes, Sigma 17-50 is good.

Tried both extensively, bought the Sigma. Every bit as good as the Canon (17-55mm) IMHO and a whole lot cheaper.

Sigma is the perfect equivalent to the canon version 17-55 and build quality is leaps and bounds over the 18-55.

+1, sigma 17-50. It is a nice lens to have. I was too struggling with the canon and sigma.

From what I've seen, Sigma is comparable to Canon: slightly better in some areas (like, no zoom creep, and not a dust collector like Canon), slightly worse in other areas (like AF speed), and pretty much on par in terms of optical quality.

Right now (until the end of March) Sigma has a rebate for the lens, so it only costs 594$ at major retailers (Amazon, B&H, Adorama). Go for it!

I didn't find a very discernible difference between the AF of the two lenses. I did find the Sigma to have better center sharpness and the Canon to have better edge sharpness (that's wide-open to maybe two stops down).

From infinity to minimum (and back) the Canon is a bit faster. The advantage of ring-USM vs. micro-HSM. Also, the Canon has full-time manual focus whilst the Sigma does not.

How is the servo focusing with the Sigma 17-50? With my 30/1.4, even though the one shot focusing is dead on, it seems to update itself in servo mode less frequently than my USM lenses and as a result, I miss more shots with it.

Many many threads already covered this lens performance. It's very good.

I have only tried chasing my kids around in servo once a few days ago with the 17-50 and it didn't do horribly. But it didn't blow me away either.
