Can you repeat the question, please?

First of all, let it be said that this is not another Canon versus Nikon thread.

Now, I ask this question: Are we expected to hold the competitor brand in some sort of contempt? There is a presumption of brand loyalty out there and even in this forum where members may question others about their decision to "jump ship." I understand that there are certainly valid reasons to why we choose one brand over another - analogs in other consumer areas exist in the choice between car manufacturers, computer models and operating systems, and Coke versus Pepsi to name a few.

However, why is the presumption that something must be wrong with the other brand for us to choose the one we use? People often ask me why I decided to buy Canon. I tell them I like the feel of it in my hands. Then they delve a little further and ask what's wrong with Nikon. When I tell them Nikon is a very reputable company and, in some respects and for some people, can be considered better than Canon (ex: arguably, AF or ISO performance). Then they are surprised that I would make such not so disparaging remarks. Am I expected to be hateful? Just let me take some photos.

Thoughts?

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Nostalgia? Haha...I shot first with an AE-1 that was my dads. I had an Elan 7NE for a while because I wanted to learn darkroom techniques (hey it was interesting at least).

When I got my first DSLR, it ended up being Canon. I had looked at Nikon but like you the Canon felt really good in my hand so I stuck with them.

Now I have so much invested in lenses that I don't think there is a need to switch for any but the most drastic reason. I still can take amazing shots with the Canon and it does everything I ask of it. So all the switching stuff I don't get. Sure the newest Nikon may turn out to be a bit "better" than the newest Canon or vice versa. But there isn't anything Nikon is doing that is so much better that it is even remotely tempting to switch.

Started with Canon point and shoots, and was the most familiar with Canons. Had great experiences with them as a brand and looked to them for a dSLR. I think the Canons look/feel a little better, but I'm sure the Nikons would do a good job. I like Nikon--competition is good. Just think what our gear would cost if there was not a major competitor!

I use more $$ worth of Nikon microscopes at work than I will ever own in camera gear, and I'm very happy with them as well. That said, I don't see any reason to switch out of Canon dSLRs unless the market completely changes.

Maybe it's just me but when I was doing my research it was more difficult to find info on Nikon... also having some Canon gear at work made it familiar.

Heh! Well, I'd say that when you are amongst hobbyists/enthusiasts there will always be an element of "this vs that" with various people, like the classical American "Ford vs Chevy" positioning, especially before the auto market got so swamped with Toyotas, Hondas, Datsuns, etc. Any more, there is so little reason to be brand-loyal when it comes to autos...

Anyway, then there is the sincere question: why would you choose "BrandX" (major maker) over "BrandY" (majoe competitor)?

Well, that can be an honest question, although in today's photography market this is not just about Canon and Nikon. The question can deserve an "honest" response, but it would probably be a lot more complicated than "I like Canon better than Nikon"! Or "I like a big DSLR better than a small 4:3 camera"...

I never engage in Canon vs Nikon "debates" personally. I've never shot with a Nikon, so can't give any kind of informmed viewpoint there. I can talk about Canon, specifically the cameras that I have used and about some Canon things "in general", but I don't bother wasting my time and energy with the "brand loyalty" thing!

At the time: Full Frame sensor, better lens selection, more appealing ergonomics. In the first two categories it appears Nikon have mostly covered the gap and in some areas moved ahead, the third is totally subjective.

I had them my business card and invite them to visit my site.

I add that I'm always willing to answer questions about Canon.

Works every time... :D

While I'm sure that works for you, if I tried to use my images to justify using a Canon, I think people would use my images as a reason not to buy Canon. :o:(

So you bought the lenses first?

When I bought my first DSLR, Canon was clearly "leading the way" with the 30D, the new 5D, and then my third, the 1DM3. And so I built up my lens collection fairly quickly.

In more recent years, I can't even consider a new Canon lens, not to mention the cost of a whole new system!

But this thread is not about Canon vs Nikon -- please read the OP! It's about how you respond to a question that could be about Canon vs Nikon, although as I mentioned above, it could be an honest (and objective) question...

The cameras brand name never bothered me. I liked the feel of the Canon cameras in my hand & they had a good selection of lenses etc available. The image quality that Canon could produce was a deciding factor for me to stay with them, but that's not saying that Nikon, Pentax, Minolta or any other brand couldn't match or even beat them for producing great quality cameras / lenses.

 I'm not sure where you're coming from. I responded to someone who said that he tells people he went with Canon because he had Canon lenses, which would imply he had the lenses first and then bought a camera. Nobody is turning this into a vs. thread, the response just didn't make much sense to me.
Why you choose to stay with a brand is different to me than why you make the initial choice, which is what I figured the OP was asking.
