got it few days ago and decided to go to the zoo today. It was very cloudy, so all of them are at iso 400 and shutter speed 1/40-1/250. Most under 1/100. And handheld (with help from fences, but on them there were kids as well pushing and pulling...)

After viewing this thread the Sigma is a strong contender for my next lens. I am trying to decide between this one and the Canon 400 F/5.6 L. I know...totally different...but similar price ranges to accomplish the same thing. I really only need the focal range around 400 .Sigma has the extra zoom range and OS as pluses and the Canon probably is faster at 400 with quicker AF, lighter and the edge on sharpness. However, the OS along with the very good IQ is making the Sigma a real possibility.

Don't mind at all, the more the merrier. I could use the ego-pump now and then. Although, I don't think I'd admit in public that you like my work, people will start to think you have no taste...

Part of the learning curve with this lens I was prepared for. However the actual education I have gotten has been suprising. I have discovered that many times, the smaller birds are far easier to get cleaner shots of, vs the bigger birds.

I got the lens a few months ago, and I ran out and started looking for birds. Being winter, gulls, geese, and ducks were the obvious targets. I was unhappy with the results. I got lucky to shoot a few song birds. They came out great.

Turns out that shooting a big bird that is maybe 4-5 times the size of a song bird, however I have been drawn into shooting those birds 10 times further away. Making those big birds, effectively smaller than the closer small birds. It is a huge (at least for me) learning lesson. I never thought about it from those terms of scale.

One of the things I love about this lens is that it makes me THINK every time I push the shutter button. I never realized how lazy of a photographer I was, and my previous results showed it.
