I Simonius,

Good to see you've made your way over here. I remember you from the 5D Mark II rumor thread days. Good times, good times. Still hunting for that elusive small weather sealed FF body from Canon, eh?

Unfortunately, I think Canon's definition of 'professional' extends only to photojournalists and sports photographers, and now Hollywood - i.e. corporate sales. Evidently, the rest of us - wedding photographers, landscape photographers, studio photographers, etc. - aren't 'professionals' and don't need good AF or weather sealing.

I don't know why people have to switch brands. Use both, and take advantage of the benefits of both.

I tried that. Not a good way to go IMO unless you have unlimited funds and don't mind a lot of duplication.

I am so worried that the 5DIII will be far too focused on video features, with stills capability advancement taking a second seat. (Just look at the headphone input e.t.c.)

Oh well. I am still looking forward to the official announcement, and I sure hope that it will prove me wrong.

3D - Hi-res/landscape/studio

Why would such a camera need a pro AF system? Hell, most digital MF cameras have one focus point AF systems.

I understand there is a movie out right now that was shot with 5D2 bodies, can't recall the name of it but something based on the military.

Some just want a D800(E) but rebadged to Canon. Anything short of the D800 and it'll be a failure.

Yeah, but Hasselblad's TrueFocus system means that you can focus and recompose, since the camera's focus system can compensate for camera movement.

Also, having a pro AF system makes the camera a little more multipurpose.

Say, for example, you're a travel photographer, using a 3D (1 AF point) and a 5D (61 AF points). You might keep a 16-35L on the 3D and a 70-200 on the 5D, in order to be ready for anything. But, then, you want to take an environmental portrait - but the 3D doesn't have AF points at the right places. Then you have to switch lenses, wasting valuable time, until the opportunity for the shot is gone.

If you say that such a camera doesn't need a pro AF system, then why does a still camera need video? Why does an action camera like the 1Dx need live view?

The point is, each of these makes the camera more versatile. And the competition has it.

Well, that's what the cream of the crop offers.

Do you want the best available, or do you want to say that an inferior camera is just as good, just because it says 'Canon'?

And, if you were a new buyer, and were able to choose either system without a pre-existing collection of lenses, would you choose the one with the better camera or the worse camera, when both are around the same price?

and are you going to give us money to have enough funds for both?

Not to mention I've heard constantly switching back and forth between two different menu/button layouts can be maddening.

And you're basing this on what? The D800 has yet to get into the hands of actual users and the replacement for the 5D2 hasn't even been announced yet.

Because the context of the argument was about a hypothetical, 40MP 3D, designed for studio and landscape photography, having only one AF point.

Given the choice, and for the same price, would you take a 40MP body with poor AF and incomplete weather sealing, or the 36MP body with pro AF and complete weather sealing?
