Exactly what Overread says, you actually can't or shouldn't compare a 100% crop from a 7D with a 40D. A 100% crop on the 7D is way more magnified.
If you still want to compare you should view the 10MP photo on 100% and the 18MP on 55%.

@Gabebalasz: Wow, very impressive! Thanks for posting!
I didn't expect this sharpness with a 2x extender at all, I'm amazed.
Great job on your photos by the way, they are beautiful!

Thank you.
I think I was able to provide a decent demonstration of what the 120-300 OS and Canon III 2x TC is capable of.
While my BIF images on top of the previous page are no doubt less than impressive, those were shot under less than ideal conditions, plus we all know that a 2x TC is not a champ when it comes to AF tracking. I am personally OK with my 2x TC BIF shots, I had expected worse actually.

The latest static bird shots came out nice indeed, I am very happy with them. Conditions were nice yesterday and it showed. If these latest pictures had come out bad, than I would know by now that I have a problem :)
But I did expect good results from the sunny static shots since all my test shots indoors (with external flashes) had been quite sharp for 600mm.

heres some from today, all at 600mm and heavy crops from 7d. I also notice the 7d is harder on the lens than the 5dii when cropping heavy

Hey gabe your 2x tc shots look good. On a rating of 1-10 how do you rate your 2x sigma and your new canon 2xii ?

well, I could rate the Sigma 7, the Canon III an 8. The difference is certainly not 2x the price. They have equal sharpness most of the frame with the Canon sharper in the corners. The Canon has a tad bigger magnification and adds a tiny bit barrel dist to the image while the Sigma adds pincushion. Since the 120-300 has a tiny bit pincushion at 300mm, the Canon is a better fit, since it cancels out the distortion. But these distortion figures are absolutely insignificant, barely noticable.
What's noticable though is th Canon's superior handling of CA and fringing. The Sigma is OK by any means, no problems there either but the Canon is clearly better in this area.

I do not notice any distortion with the 2xii and ca is usualy not an issue unless in extreme contrast conditions. But that goes for just about any lens when you add a tc to it. I've had the 7d for a couple of weeks now and I just can not get the IQ as in clean, sharp photos as I do with the 5dii. I am getting better but Its a whole different pp than the 5dii. I see I'm sharping a lot more and notice if I don't ETTR I,m screwed with noise on 800 or higher iso.I'm gonna get it its just a matter of time and thats all I got right now til the 1dx comes out. Just dreaming. Well thanks for your sigma vs canon review

Do any of you use a CP filter on this lens? I'm thinking of picking one up in the next
couple weeks, and was wondering what people have been using. Then I need to make
a trip to Toledo, OH for Jedi Training from the Master and to use his Magic Window :-P

I had a Sigma 105mm CPL a while back, it was a very nice filter and my only gripe was the Sigma red flock case it came in. Every time I took the filter out, it was covered in red dust!

Yeah, these were taken from my blind, sitting outside, no Magic Window here. (which honestly results in a little better IQ unsurprisingly)

Back in business with a new 120-300/2.8 OS :)
First testshots are looking again very good.

Wide open with an old Kenko 2.0 DG MC4, ISO 2000 and 600mm:

Not really bad, but i am waiting for the Sigma 2.0DG. Should be better than the Kenko (overexposures +1 and doesn't report to exifs).

Nice, I think you got a sharp lens.

EDIT:
Just something I noticed, the 100% crop we see here is not a true 100% crop. I went to your Flickr and saw that the 100% crop's original is 1600 pixels wide (while here we see a smaller version), so if people would like to see the real 100% crop, they need to click on the above image and then select "original" which will display the true 100% crop.

No big deal, just something I thought I'd mention. :)
