I've been asked (suckered) into doing a photoshoot of a couple of cars with some models at a guys shop. Huge space, grey walls and we want them all dark backgrounds. I've got 5 yongnuo yn-460ii speed lights and will have a qbox 24 and a 22" beauty dish soon. As i'm going though the shoot in my head I'm thinking what can I do for a modeling light / moonlight so I and the models can see what we're doing in between flashes.

Anyone have any options / ideas. I did a test in my garage with a couple of strobes and a 60 watt clamp light, the temperature difference and the weird shadows is something I don't want to fight.

I wish there was a way I could hide a LED pack in my soft box or on my strobes.

A "modeling light" is not just any light that allows you to "see what we're doing in between flashes".

A modeling light mimics the lighting effect that will be produced by the flash itself. It "models" the light coming from the flash.

The term for the device, "modeling light" is not just a happenstance term. It is an exact term that describes exact what the apparatus does.

The effect is far more encompassing that just a matching color temp. In most cases the flash will overwhelm any exposure effect of the modeling light, so the color balance of these light will be largely unimportant.

Enjoy! Lon

I have shot that a few times. Have a light on. You will be fine. Keep the shutter at sync speed.

The right side is super dark because I did not have a strobe there.

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

I have used battery powered LED lights as a modeling light in an Apollo Orb softbox. I used a Lastolite Triflash bracket to mount 2 flashes and the LED light. The LED light is much dimmer than the flashes. When I meter it with the L-358 it says the flash is 100% of the light, so the LED is not really contributing to the picture. It just lets me see shadows on faces when setting the shot up. This only works in a dimly lite room.

I don't think that is at all what the OP is looking for.

This is pretty much exactly the idea of what I'm looking for. I just went to the shop to get an idea of the vehicles and 2 of the girls I will be shooting. This is going to be a nightmare.

What LED light did you use in your softbox. I'm going to have to play with some LED lights to see how much light I can get.

All my shots are going to be in very dimly lit shop.
