doesn't hurt me, but people are whining about missing this or that for video. But a video system then!

IT does hurt because the price jumps up cuz of the video specs :)

I'm telling you there is going to be a real shortage on the better Nikon lenses starting in a couple months and going late into the year.

to be frank, this new body is worthy of the name 5D mark III. Its not a significant upgrade thats why its a "mark" version. If its a big bump like a D800 then it should be call 3D...now i'm really missing 3D

Whelp, that's just the way of things. Honestly I don't think the huge price hike from the Mark II was because of software-side video features. I think the $3500 price tag can lay the blame on the 61-point AF, 6 FPS, expanded ISO, 'better' sensor, dual card slots, etc etc. IMO physical upgrades are probably gonna add more cost than software - but what do I know.

They could have called it a 6D and announced the discontinuation of the 5D and 7D lines. Would that have made the OP happier?

Nailed it right on the head with this observation. Close thread... OP is another wanna be Canon engineer or Nikon apologist.

How do you figure?

The 5DMkII was on the drawing board probably 7-9 years ago?

No. Technology moves much faster than that.

Yeesh. People making judgements based on pre-release samples really grind my gears. And complaining about this upgrade? Isn't this exactly what the majority of people where calling for? It's not a camera for me (don't care about AF points or FPS), but it still seems like a nice upgrade.

I'll just re-post something that I posted on DPR a few minutes ago in response to some Sigma trolls:

Wow, a camera company puts out awful pre-release JPEG samples?!?!?! Color me shocked! I really don't understand the thought process behind this stuff. I've never seen official samples that impressed me one bit.

X100 samples? Crap.
SD1 samples? Semi-crap.
X-pro 1 samples? Crap.
5d Mark II samples? Crap.
D800/e samples? Super crap considering the expectations I had.
5d Mark III samples? Crap.

Note to camera producers:

1. Pick your freaking samples better. Any one of us here could produce an image that gives a better impression of the camera's capabilities than these.
2. Don't show us OOC JPEGS. Out of all of the people interested enough in this camera to be perusing these samples, I would say 90% of them are planning on shooting RAW. And the only camera I've ever used whose JPEG engine does any justice to the sensor is the X100.

Funny that Nikon just adds video and MP and we think it is a HUGE upgrade. Canon adds AF and performance and it's a minor upgrade. I think some people are just sad Canon can't claim most MP anymore even though very few of us print (literally) wall sized prints.

So true, I feel I keep reading the same stuff with everything that has ever been released. Specs are specs, wait and see how it delivers.

IT does hurt because the price jumps up cuz of the video specs :)

Can you supply a source?

They need the new faster Digic chip for the frame rate of stills. So what extra cost is needed for Video hardware - except the addition of the headphone jack?

They need the Video firmware for their video cameras. So how does it increase the price of the 5D3 to fill up the Digic with the same algorithms they have in other cameras?

The sales of all the 5D2 for video recording made the 5D2 sell better than if only stills photographers had bought it. That probably affected the price more (lowering it) than any extra costs for the video features. Canon is of the belief that they can't sell the camera without video. So they can't charge premium for supplying that video function to all the people who don't care if it's there or not.

Anyway - there have been quite a number of threads already worrying about how expensive the 5D2 is just because of video. It will obviously be a number of threads for the 5D3 too. Some day, some one might possibly be able to show a real selling argument for the video increasing the price. Will you be the first?
