Going to be very interesting to see real world raw file shots with this camera. Looks like plus' and advantages to me. AF system look great, dual cards is a must have, LCD is impressive, lay out and everything about it looks awesome...
... After looking at all the images they posted its pretty obvious a lot of noise [reduction?] has been applied to the 3200 and up files. So lots of red flags have been raised. Lots of questions about IQ as well after looking at the 100% examples. They look frighteningly similar to the 7D IQ at 100% which i hated. Not going to buy into the krap of your looking at it more than 100% arguments because of pixel density arguments. The IQ better look great on a 100% crop or they can keep this thing.

So yeah, Im a little concerned about the images shown and will be in the waiting to see corner on this update. Price is too high at this point but again, waiting to see real world test and results....

I'm gonna wait and see what the real story is because you really cant tell for now. Maureen your dead bang on the $$$$$. I think it will drop in price in the next 6 months.

If the real world test on raw files show it to be a step towards 7D IQ v/s 1Dx IQ,,, i think canon will have serious problems with the update. The AF system is an about time for me but they need to keep the image quality that the 5D series has been famous for intact. If that is changed and it goes 7Dish......they wont sell. The examples they have shown really have me concerned.

...nothing ground breaking that i can see. Nikon went with MP's for the wow factor.

Yep. Agreed. I'm trying to work out where the 5D fits now. All the images I've seen so far (Canon and third party websites) really haven't impressed. In fact - just like you - I looked at a few and thought "that looks like shots from my 7D". Not that I dislike the 7D, but you'd expect the 5D3 to be leagues ahead (which it surely must be, so I'll wait for RAW files).

They've now got this hybrid with what appears to be a top class AF system, moderate FPS, but much lower MP than the D800, possibly worse weather sealing (I can't comment), one eye on video features, and from what we've seen - less than impressive example shots.

Is it a landscape camera (or would you go for the D800[e]?), is it a sports camera (or would you go for a 1D model?), is it a birders camera (or would you go for a 7D?). Very much a lack of wow factor, as you say. I really couldn't care less about in camera HDR, processing of jpegs from RAW, ability to make coffee etc... all those things can be done (better) off camera. What really matters (to me) is the image quality off the sensor.

I still want one, and I want it to turn out to be great, but I'm not confident. As for the price... well, frankly they're having a laugh.

What does Ken Rockwell say about the 5DIII?

Kenny says: "The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is the best digital SLR ever made by Canon". :D

I don't know much about that site and I probably would NEVER switch to Nikon. I already pre-ordered the 5DIII. However after reading that, in a way, he seems to be a Canon fanboy. Maybe I'm wrong, but quotes like this point to someone who is not looking at this objectively.

"But I have to say looking at the specs, the 5D MK III looks like the winner. If it matches the hype, Canon will beat Nikon – AGAIN!"

But then again, he does own both gear from both companies.

Chris, if you dont mind whom did you pre-order from ?

Regards, Ron ;)

I expect him to mention it in passing about six months after release like he did the 1D4. Anyone who takes KR seriously is [fill in the blank].

I read a few pages and have gathered most people are still unhappy about the new 5D?

I don't understand why! It seems better than the previous 5D. What's not to like?

the price :p

^^^^^^^^^^^^

this is what has me concerned. Hated this about the 7D. 5D2 WONT do this. If they did this to the 5D3 people are going to be Pi$$ed.

Like i said,,,,,,school is out. Im waiting for guys like madman and teamspeed to get their hands on one. We will know in about 3-4 weeks when these testers start to release raw files and the results.

Im in no rush thats for sure

Don't know where your getting that from, what you might be thinking of however is when comparing ISO between the D800 and 5Diii, it would be better to downsize the D800 file to the same size as the 5Diii in order to attain an equal comparison, otherwise you could compare a 1mp FF file at pixel level and it would look amazing, but that it isn't representative of real usage.

Don't know what's hard to understand about that...

I agree with that! Every camera that is released is stated to be the best in the world by Kenny

What's 500$ when you're talking 3000$ already. I see the point, but I mean, it's not that bad.

Slow fps and bad autofocus is normally what I've head from 5D II owners. That's been addressed, you would figure people would be ecstatic!

Anyone wanna gimme a good deal on their 5DII? :D

I'm feeling the same thing again as when 50D and 60D was announced:

Underwhelmed to say the least. While Nikon's competing model seemed more complete.

Back when choosing between Nikon and Canon, it was the 70-200f4L IS that tipped me over to Canon. I will remain so despite D800 blowing away 5DIII this time again.

When Nikon releases similar spec lens with similar performance, however, it's time to reconsider...

Come on Gareth. That was talking about comparing 2 cameras with different megapixel counts and having to resize the bigger down to the smaller instead of comparing both at full 100%. This comparison picture you quoted was 2 shots from the same camera at different ISOs, which is completely different.
