Technically you are correct, in that a tilt shift lens is used to correct perspective distortion. However there is nothing that could have been done with the provided image to correct the distortion, except fixing it in post.

A lower angle would not have provided the framing desired, and the barrel distortion is just a function of the lens that was being used.

The distortion would've been a non-issue if shot from a lower angle or if a T/S lens was used. I don't think the lens is the culprit here. Would this be correct?

Why, Yes, Tilting it would of have solved it, however that would entail using an entirely different lens that was custom designed to deal with distortion related issues that other lenses have.

There are angles to minimize the appearance of distortion, but it is still there, also there is barrel distortion and pin-cushion distortion, barrel distortion is generally found in the wide angles and wide-end zooms, pin cushion is found on the other end.

So almost all lenses feature it to some degree, a 70-200 will show some barrel distortion at 70 because its the widest in the zoom range, and pin-cushioning at 200.

The degree to which they show this is a mark of the lens.

and all the lines in the image made it much more visible. I never saw it on this lens until this shoot, and I've had that lens for almost 5 yrs now.
