It is rare that I will use a strap.
Spider holster works well most the time or nothing at all when the 300 and monopod are in use.
On the rare occasions that I do use a strap it is an optech.

Always use straps, though sometimes my neck regrets it.

But for the peace of mind in the event I drop my gear or fall....

It is always around my neck, unless is on a tripod.
I even ask the person who's helping me take a photo to use it (that is if its a family member)

My camera went without a strap during the period where I could still exchange it. I kept the camera and it has had a strap ever since.

I use either a fixed strap long enough to wear across my body or a sing strap. I haven't used a strap around my neck since I got the 100-400. My straps are always detachable since I don't use on at all when I'm at home taking pictures of the baby or on a tripod. The strap is more for when I'm out and about with my camera.

When we planned a few trips abroad, I bought the pacsafe strap. Fairly uncomfortable and in hindsight I was just being paranoid. It WAS however longer than the Canon strap and allowed me to throw the tripod and 100-400 over my shoulder with the strap still around my neck for safety.
I just bought a 300 f2.8 IS and wonder how everybody else carries the lens, camera and tripod?

It's been quite a long time since I have felt jealousy, but I recognize the taste again :)

my strap is on quick release buckets because on a tripod, that strap acts like a sail.
and when I'm in studio or shooting something fast paced I don't bother with the strap.

general walking about i keep the strap on.

I had a PacSafe strap on my 300 around my necck, and the OpTech/POTN strap on my 1D3 hanging loose, until the time the stitching on the PacSafe pulled out. Fortunately, I was able to grab the camera before the strap slid all the way around and let the camera/lens crash to the ground (I have witnesses!). The OpTech ended up being my strap of choice for thew remainder of the day. I've since changed how the webbing bits at the end of the PacSafe attach to the camera to eliminate reliance on the stitching. But yeah, I carry the camera/lens/monopod combo over my shoulder with the strap around my neck. I trust the RRS clamps and plates to be solid.

I had the stitching pull out on mine as well, and I only carried the 100-400! I caught it before it totally failed, darn good catch on your part!

I'll check to see how I can modify it. While not overly comfortable with it's small amount of padding, I did like the length and the locking safety features on the clips that attached to those short pieces of webbing. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks Newb! Definitely a huge purchase for me. When I decided to buy, I called a local camera store and got lucky on one traded in the day before. I may put three straps on the darn thing lol.

I use the Canon hand strap and an Op-Tech neck strap with quick release.

If I'm busy shooting, I use the hand strap and wrap the neck strap in such a way that it essentially locks in around my thumb, making dropping the camera almost impossible. When I have the camera on a tripod, I use the quick release on the neck strap. I figure I have the best of both worlds.

Those who never use a strap probably have never experienced the thrill of a camera falling out of your hands onto the ground or into the water, and

those who never use a strap have never experienced the equal thrill of an inadvertent release of the QR plate from a ballhead QR while the tripod was slung over your shoulder to transport it all a moderate distance to a new shooting position.
