The advantages of the 20-35mm OVER the kit lens are numerable: I would not trade a 20-35mm for 5 of the kit lenses (even with IS).

The build quality of the 20-35mm -
The lighting fast and SILENT (accurate) USM focusing motor of the 20-35mm -
The built in distance scale of the 20-35mm -
Full time manual focusing of the 20-35mm -
The image quality wide open of the 20-35mm -
The faster overall apertures of the 20-35mm -

Keep your kit lenses....this is the type of lens that Canon should be putting in the boxes with new cameras. IS on a kit lens is akin to putting a bow on a pig...

How would you say this lens compares at 20mm to the 20mm 2.8 (at equal apertures) or the Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5?

Really nice shots j-dogg - are those both at 20mm?

yes they are....and I still have this lens. It really is one of those sleeper lenses Canon made in the early EOS days.

I owned and liked this lens but like a fool sold it when I bought a Tamron 17-50 for my 400D, now I would like to own it again for my 1D .
Build quality is good just like all the other late 90's USM lenses Canon bought out, likewise the auto focus is as good as any L lens I have used. I feel the build of these mid level lenses designed in the days when film was still king to be better than later model designs that replaced them,,,but I may be wrong .
Between my daughter and myself we still own and use the following older design USM lenses
70-210 f3.5
28-135 is x 2
28-105 f3.5
24-85 f3.5
100 f2.0
I find the auto focus on all these to be top notch.

How would you guys compare this lens optically to the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II? Or even other lenses? I have nothing wider than a 50mm on my 5D II and I'm finding it hard to find any used copies of lenses I want.
