The Canon lens' ability to switch quickly from wide to narrow fields of view was useful at a cyclocross race. In these paired images, riders are first shown on a flat stretch of a course using a long focal length, then vaulting an obstacle with a wide focal length.

Very nice!

This lens is definitely a winner when it comes to convenience.

Here some more of mine.

The Canon lens, paired with a 60D, was an unconventional but useful choice for an indoor race in a brightly-lit facility, because of the need to rapidly switch from wide to narrow fields of view.

Perhaps these will be of interest. The first two are HDR panoramas, and the third is a portrait of of a little girl on her first birthday, and the last one is a portrait of a woman I know. I have found this lens to be quite versatile.

This is one of the many stone arches that lead into the city of Coral Gables, Fl.

Can't get exif data for the entire pano, but here it is for one of the images used in it.

The HDR's are much sharper in reality, downsizing them for flickr has some significant effects. If you want to see more accurately what the 18-200 is capable of the whole set of a study of that arch (all HDR's) can be see in higher resolution in a slideshow here. http://vorlon1.smugmug.com …=20727984&AlbumKey=XcWjD3 (external link)

Thanks.

Comparison between the EF-S 18-200 mm and the 50 mm. I threw in the mix an old EF 35-70, just because I had it...

I put the camera on a tripod and shot the Triboro Bridge in NYC at every aperture each lens had to offer (and also for focal lengths 35mm and 70 mm for the two zooms).

The general field of view at 50mm is:

Below are 100% crops for the 3 lenses:

No significant difference... I was expecting the 50mm to be sharper than the 18-200, but that held true only at the limits (i.e. wide open f5.6, the 50mm also lost a lot of sharpness at f1.8).

In general, all three lenses are nearly equivalent in sharpness from f8.0 to f16. f22 is pretty bad for all three...

Bottom line: When I play tourist, I will be carrying my 60D with the 35-70 as the (lighter) walkaround lens hanging from my neck, and keep the 18-200 in the backpack. The 50 mm is good for shallow DOF photos.
