Don't let one review persuade you against picking up the 17-55. It really is fantastic. I don't want to hijack Saxi's thread so I'll leave it at that.

It is a great lens, it's my goto lens but purely because of focal length & f/2.8 and I shoot indoors a lot.

I've seen some amazing shots from it and I have taken some great shots as well, but it just feels hit or miss to me. The 70-200 and 135 were almost always hits and they roughly all the same price range. I always felt I could shoot behind the back between my legs with my eyes closed and the 70-200 would nail it.

The Sigma 30 won't work on FF.

Well then I guess I wouldn't be getting that. I never bought anything other than Canon lenses, I've always been nervous about third party lenses.

I know it isn't a huge problem, I just hate seeing all the specs build up in it. Mostly my ocd.

It's not too hard to clean out the dust. I bought a used 17-55 on eBay and got a great deal because it was super-dusty, and then I cleaned it out and it was like new!

Just look on youtube for dust and 17-55 and there's some tutorials on exactly what you need to do to open it up. I opened it, used a rocket blower to blow out the dust, and had it back together in 5 min, with no negative effects on IQ.

Even if you still want to sell it, cleaning it might help to get you more money for it.

Dang, I'm strongly considering this lens for my t3i and now you made me have doubts! The reviews I've seen have been pretty favorable though...it may not be "L" quality but I don't like the focal lengths of the 24-70 and 24-105 on my crop

I agree with Digital AM, if you chose this reason as it fit you, you will likely be very happy. Especially on a T3i. I am comparing it to all L series lenses, and that's my disappointment. It's been touted by many it is an L lens without the marking and weather sealing, I'm just saying I never felt that way myself, it's a great lens though. I'd buy it again in the heartbeat if I was on crop. The only other reason I wouldn't is if I went all primes.

My luck if I took it apart, I'd put more dust in than I took out. Interesting to know people have done it though.

Don't have doubts! The only downside is the high price. Yes they do get a little dust (mine has a small bit), but it has NO EFFECT on image quality whatsoever. It also has one of the fastest AFs in the Canon lineup. If you have crop, it's a better choice than the 24-70 or 24-105 imho...alternative is the Sigma 17-50mm OS--sharper in center but weaker in the corners--but cheaper. Only reason not to choose this one (or the siggy) would be if ur goin to go full frame soon. For a normal range zoom, the only AF Lens that will prolly really be much sharper all around will be the 24-70 L MK2, but that's in another price bracket.

I have one (prolly will sell soon if i switch to nikon, aghhhh), and I'm very happy w/it. Only real downsides are price, corner sharpness at the wide end isn't perfect (very good though, better than any other crop zoom i've tried), and build isn't the best.

You get the Sigma 30mm f/1.4? That's the lens I was seriously considering a while ago for the 7D. I heard it is great and was considering picking it up.

Yep. It's probably been my favorite lens on the 7D. Although now that you're moving to full-frame as well, it won't work.

Rob, outstanding photos! Are you also getting the 5DIII?

Unlikely, probably a 5d2, the 3 seems to offer me very little, more tempted with a D800.

I'm seriously considering to get a 17-55 to replace my 24-105 as I stick with t2i...
What I concern is about the build quality, I think the IQ should be fine..

Well it seems there are a few nay sayers when it comes to the EF 17-55. I have been saving up to get one for my 550d. I do not have a lot of experience, but, if your lens is still working and just a bit dusty with poor IQ, maybe you can offer it to a noob like me for the right price.

Don't bother, get the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 OS HSM ;) (see the eleventy billion threads about it and why its a better choice)

I agree. This lens has been part of my kit for several years now, and is the best general purpose zoom lens available for a Canon crop sensor, IMO (excluding price).

That being said, I am considering selling mine this year. I may be adding a 5D2 to my kit and keeping the 7D. I would replace the 17-55mm with the 24-105L, with the idea that I would use the 5D2 mostly with the 24-105L for landscapes and general photography, and the 7D would be used with my telephoto lenses for wildlife and sports. The prime lenses could work with either body, depending on what I was shooting. I would keep the 10-22mm for those rare occasions when I need an ultra-wide angle, but I find that I do not need this very often -- so no need to switch to a 17-40L for the 5D2.
