I use Canon speedlights with ebay radio triggers. It's really annoying when the speedlights turn off by itself to save power and my radio trigger becomes unresponsive. Is there a way, some setting, to keep these speedlights turned on the whole time?

Thanks

On the 580ex II it is C.Fn 01. Set it to 1 to disable auto power off.

I think most of the other Canon flashes have a C.Fn for this, but it varies by model.

You can also change this via your flash control menu with the unit mounted to your camera.

I think it's like ext.flash cfn settings or something like that

Only if you have a 40D or newer camera and the exII version of the flashes. Since the OP does not state their equipment, this might not be the case.

I had the same issue, very easy fix. You hold the C.FN button for a few seconds to get into the custom function menu. Custom function 01, auto power on/off is what you need to change. By default, it is set to turn your flash off in about 90 seconds of being idle (drove me crazy with 3 Canon flash heads!).

You toggle this on or off with the +/- Select/set Button. Change it once and you are done. Flash will now stay on until your batteries are flat.

C.Fn Function Setting No. Settings and Description
00 Distance indicator display 0 Meters (m)
1 Feet (ft)
01 Auto power off 0 Enabled
1 Disabled

I does look like Canon tried to keep this a standard custom function. It is Cfn. I set to 1 on the 430ex and 430exII. It is the same for the 580exII but the original 580ex it is Cfn. 14 set to 1.

I don't think it is sarcasm... There were no online manuals that we could find in the USA site. We could find some in other retailer websites. The links I posted are a new addition.

it's that whole "teach a man to fish..." thing...

give him the answer, and he'll only come here to ask for other answers...
give him an idea of where these answers can be found, and he may just be able to find those answers quicker!!! and maybe learn a thing or 2 at the same time!

A forum like this is great for scenarios that aren't covered by the manual - it's like extra experience... waiting for someone else to give you the answer isn't always the best method, and when something this simple is covered by the manual, it's always a great idea to remind people that manuals were created for a reason...
