POTN has become a nasty place.

Nonsense. POTN is still a wonderful place. Some people may act nasty here and there, but POTN as a whole is still a gem!

thanks for an actually helpful post.

im gonna try that tomorrow

It matters not to me but you have to be careful what you say around here. You started out with "Why isn't Canon as Sharp as a Nikon and then later stated "i thought this was common knowledge"

You basically insulted the Canon community and then are wondering why you are getting a little sand kicked in your face. I can post multiple images that can equal Nikon. Check this persons work out (my benchmark) who is a Canon shooter.

Like I stated the 70-200 mark 1 is good but not Canon's best. First you need to compare apples to apples. Another suggestion is to send your gear to Canon to get calibrated. Your camera, lens or both may need a tune up. You can do MA yourself but I prefer to send my gear in.

Every time I look at that I chuckle and have to watch it several times. Very funny. Be nice to find that on you tube so I could send the link to my cat owner friends.

No - when you get the onscreen shots they are jpegs as they would look if you accepted all your defaults - your camera, in effect, creates a "preview jpeg" for on screen. SO if you had sharpening turned off at capture and the Nikon user had it turned on, their images would look sharper than yours when comparing both side by side on laptop.

I'm not a professional and just use a 60D. I shoot in RAW AND jpeg, but when I set sharpening, contrast, etc. in camera. it is still set in the cr2 file if I edit it in DPP. The RAW image opens up "as shot".

Additionally, I may have missed a few things in this quickly growing thread, but do we know what lens was being used on the Nikon? Do we know what the ISO was on each camera? Do we know shutter speeds? Do we know the metering used? Do we know anything? The OP did mention his use of apertures, but I think that's about it, unless I missed it. How can any meaningful discussion of the superiority of images between these two cameras/lens take place without multiple comparative images and complete EXIF data for both?

I don't care what the OP is about. This is the funniest thing I've seen in a while. I'm laying in bed crying. Wife thinks I'm crazy.

Me too - I have tears rolling down my cheeks. I watched it for 10 minutes and never stopped belly laughing. I finally had to turn away and scroll down without looking to recover. I'm responding to this just so I can go back and look at it again later. You can see that the cat is nonchalantly jumping to the other building but doesn't expect the ledge to be so slippery.

I don't think this guy is a troll either. He has a ton of Canon gear and 900 posts. That would be a lot of work just to start a troll thread.

My 7D shoots soft in RAW and requires sharpening PP. I'm sure something like that is going on here.

sorry didnt originally see that

CF3-2: Slow
CF3-3: 0 Af priority/ Tracking Priority
CF3-4: 0 Main Focus Point Priority
CF3-8: 1 Enable (left/right assist points)

That was my original setup but I found CF3-4 set to 1 (continuous track) much better, and also set CF3-2 to a medium slow instead of full slow.

So try continuous track instead of the main focus point priority which you have now and see if it makes a difference.

Also with the MK3 you should make sure all the AF fixes have been done, and that you're at firmware 1.2.3 at least .. 1.3 is the newest firmware but I don't think there is anything in that release related to AF improvements.

Canon and Nikon are both very sharp. The reason Nikons can sometimes appear sharper while Pixel Peeping (a mental illness) is that Canons default to a higher level of Noise Reduction (image smearing) from the factory and lower level of sharpening. Canon takes the position that they want the best out of box experience so they set the NR at a fairly high level to make sure noise is minimal in all their images, but it's at the cost of out of box sharpness.

What Canon considers a "Normal" level of NR, many would consider very high. I am one of those, I think their "Low" NR is still pretty high, I set mine at "Off." If you haven't changed from your default settings a Nikon will appear to sharper out of the box, although in reality, it isn't.

To fix this, start by turning OFF noise reduction and apply it in post as needed and bump up sharpening a notch or two. Experiment to find your preference. Shoot at low ISOs to keep noise low to start with and you should see better "in Camera Sharpness."

You will also see many Nikon fans posting comparative images of Nikons and Canons attempting to take advantage of these differences in defaults to show that their Nikon is better than Canon, don't believe it. They are merely using what I just described above to make themselves feel better and to cast doubt on people who never leave the default settings.

Ask yourself this question. If Nikons really were sharper than Canons do you think any pro would be using a Canon? Nuff said!
