Heres an example of the G1X using Marumi magnification filters.

Die cast VL Group A Walkinshaw commodore

With the lens attached, what becomes your minimum focusing distance? Also, does the lens attach by an adapter tube?

These are Marumi magnification filters, The set I've got are in 3 strengths, +1, +2 & +3

Stack on top of each other at 112mm focal length and your minimum focus comes back to about 10-15cm in front of the lens.

I havent had time to experiment fully, but you can't use them stacked at 28mm f/l due ti vingetting.

By chance the ones i've got are 49mm set with a 49-52 step down which just fits nicely over the boyonet end on the lens. But Canon makes a 58mm filter adapter which fits on the end of the lens using the boyonet adapter, so with the use of a stepdown I will end up mounting them with that and will also be able to use my other filters.

Received my G1X about a week ago from B&H so I've been playing with it. Bought it mostly to use as a travel alternative to the DSLR and two lenses. The big question in my mind was whether the IQ would come close to what I was getting from my 40D and 17-55mm combo. Shot several pictures with both cameras at the same settings and every single picture from the G1X was better than the 40D. In a way I'm disappointed because I've loved my 40D for years but now I know that the new processors and sensors have left it behind. On the plus side...it sure is easier to carry the G1X when traveling. The wife and I are planning to take a cruise this fall so it'll get a workout but I don't plan pack away my DSLR yet. The G1X has limitations....macro and zoom are the most obvious but I couldn't be happier with my new camera for shots in it's primary zoom range. Has anybody compared the IQ of the G1X to their 60D? How about the 7D? I'd be curious to hear how the comparison went.

The G1x and its image quality is causing a problem for me on my next DSLR upgrade. I was going to keep my 7D for wildlife and sports and invest in a 5D mk 111, now I,m not sure, the more I play with the settings of the G1x its making the 7D redundant for Landscapes and Street Life Images.
So I,m now thinking trading in the 7D for a Canon 1D mk4 to overcome the 7D noise limitations, whilst the G1x is good enough for landscapes I can see me using the G1x quite a lot and with me all the time. Its capture of fine detail has impressed me the most.

I have serious back problems and was hoping the G1X could compete with my 60D with the 15-85 for IQ. I took both cameras with me on a trip and was blown away with the IQ of the G1X. Of course the G1X doesn't focus as fast as the 60D, but for my needs it will be perfect. The 60D and lenses are going away.

For a long zoom, which I need about 5% of the time, I picked up an SX40 last week from Amazon when they had them for $249 for about an hour.

The physical size of G1x is just bit smaller than Rebal, which I was bit surprise to see it on the shop.

3. better AF and less shutter lag.

Exactly why I will never purchase this camera at the current street price.

Canon should be embarrassed with this model.

They are slowly becoming the GM of digital cameras. Too many models, each successive model rarely moves the bar and provides the consumer with true value.

Anyway this camera was not what I wanted it to be. IQ is pretty nice but everything else ...

I find it interesting how many people consider a cameras looks to be important. As somebody who wants the best image quality available for the format/price, I find it difficult to understand. Perhaps someone who considers camera appearance to be a significant buying criterion can explain what is the deal here?

I agree with CrisSearle. I bought the G1x to use when I travel instead of bringing the DSLR and lens - especially on business trips. For me, a small camera with great image quality was something I've been waiting for. I really don't care one bit about the physical appearance.

If you have a choice between an ugly camera and a gorgeous one, for the same price, which one would you choose? Of course looks are important. Otherwise we'd all be toting pink cameras and driving pink cars.

With that said, I don't think the G1x is ugly.

Of course looks are important.

I too have been surprised in this thread by how many people prefer (and value) the look of the X10 to the G1X. Between those two cameras -- looks would certainly not be an issue for me. I'd like to believe that looks aren't an issue for me at all, but, have you seen some of the pentex cameras? In the case of those, looks certainly would be a criteria point in my selection process: http://electricblog.info …cial-edition-pentax-dslr/ (external link) (that's a point against the camera just in case it isn't obvious).

And, I gotta say, if I really didn't care about looks, I would be using this (external link), because, as ridiculous as that looks.. i think it might just work. :)
