5D Mark II Future Prices (Need Advice)

Hey everyone, Im about to go full frame and have a budget of $3500. Initially I was going to buy the mark III (when it comes out in stores) but then I realized that I would have no room for new lenses. Currently I own the 7D and the only L lens I have is the 70-200mm f4L.

A local store is selling the 5D mark II for $1899 new, taxes will put me around $2050. How low do you think the mark II will drop when the mark III comes out? I have until Thursday to make my decision then the price goes back up to $2199

Any advice is much appreciated.

There is no way to answer that question. I can say with 100% certainty that the price sometime in the future will go down, just can't say with certainty when. It could be a week, month, or year. Short term it could also go up. With the MkIII as expensive as it is, it may actually keep the price of the MkII high for a while.

I was in the same dilemma as you, I got the Mark II. That $1400 can buy some good lenses. The Mark III will come down in price eventually also.As for future price I can not see the Mark II dropping say another $1000 within 2 years, but the Mark III could easily drop $1000 in the next 2 years, so I guess depreciation value, able to get it right now and extra money to spend on lenses was the reason I bought the Mark II.

The 5Dmkii has been on sale alot the last six months it seems. I dont think you are exactly going to miss out on a deal if you don't buy now. Just wait it out and see what happens, no need to jump the gun. It is going to be on sale again.

Two grand is a good price for the 5D2.

Like everyone else, I'm just guessing, but I suspect the price of the 5D3 won't drop at all until just before the end of the year, and then it will probably be just above $3000. I expect the 5D2 will remain around $2200 (new) until it disappears, except for sale periods.

Im really thinking about pulling the trigger on it..... In 6 months the price might drop a couple hundred but if I have the money now why not? A couple hundred it worth having it for 6 months versus waiting.

I don't see a reason to wait. Plus, you can get a new one now whereas in six months there might not be any new ones left and you'll have to buy used. Used can be good or bad; it depends on who you buy from.

Just to help you along, in a couple of months, the price could go up as well, or stay the same.

I am seeing used prices as low as $1700 in my local CL.

Same here but Im not interested in a used camera mainly because most of them I see on CL dont have a warranty

Canon refurb store has the 5d2 at $1760.

You can find less than one year old 5DII (still under warranty) for $1750ish on this forum. Spend the remaining on 70-200 II. Its too good of a lens

I realized a camera and a lens is far better than 2 stops of ISO performance.

I am willing to bet the 5d2 prices go up in the next couple of months just like the 70-200 F2.8 IS I went up in price when the Mark II came out.

Canon's pricing strategy pretty much assures this (Price any new product 75-100% higher than the model it is replacing)

This is probably the better deal, you can get a refurb (just as good as new) with a limited warranty on it. Sign up for CPS and invest the rest in lenses. The remaining funds can buy you some serious glass.
