Thanks Jonathan - that's a beautiful illustration of DoF difference between the two formats and useful to have the data here rather than looking on Flickr. DoF is maybe a little exaggerated, as the FF shot is at a slightly longer than equivalent FL, as you comment above but in reality, engraved focal lengths are never accurate and change with focus distance anyway. Correct not to adjust position, just focal length of course. Nicely shows off the 5D qualities too.

Yes that's true, the 50D gives off more accurate color rendition IMHO, while the 5D gives a slightly warmer/yellower/greenish tinge to it, I dial Magenta +2 or +3 on my 5D to get rid of the green hue. Check out the top of the hi-fi, it's green, not black.:p:p

Are you saying that you already corrected the 5D image the best you could or that you typically would dial in +2/+3 Magenta to get rid of the hue that is shown in the picture? First I have heard of this. Does the 5DMkii perform the same way?

One of the best images I have seen to show the difference in dof between full frame and crop. Thanks for sharing!

John

I meant I typically would dial +2/+3 Magenta to get rid of the hue that is visible in the picture. Wait, did you guys see it too? Or I was wrong?
No, 5D Mk II does not need color balance adjustment as far as I know (second shoot a few weddings using first shooter's 5D Mk II)
Glad I could be of service, Master. ;)

P.S. Too many John/Jon in this page LOL

Cheers! :D

Or I was wrong?

No you are not wrong... I see the slight green color cast. Just didn't know if this was the best you could correct it or if it was uncorrected. Thanks again.

I had a chance to try out the 5D, 5DII and the 5DIII yesterday along with a 1Ds. The 5D just felt too out dated for me. The 5DIII is about 1,500$ out of my price range. So, I've settled on getting a used or refurb 5DII.

Well, now I'm tossing a 1D3 into the pool of considerations. I've heard it has phenomenal low light capabilities and wonderful AF. I wouldn't need the FPS, and my desire here is full frame...so they're obviously 2 different cameras for what seems like different applications with some overlap in some places. Thoughts?

What specific qualities in full frame that you desire, if I may?

Typically there's less pixel density, so less noise in low light.

Better use of my EF lenses, instead of how they act on APS-C sensors.

Those are my big needs.

According to The Digital Picture, 5D Mark II has a pixel size of 6.4 micrometer, and 1D Mark III is 7.2 micrometer. So bigger pixels, less noise in higher ISO?
1D it is then, unless you need wide angle more than 21mm FOV equivalent.

I have this camera and it is my favourite Canon camera, except for being only 10Mpx.

My original advice applies, though: settle on a format and work out what that will cost you in the medium to long term. Lenses for 1.3 may cost more. You would need to buy a second body quite soon before all the available ones are too beaten up - remember, Canon aren't making any more.

In my case the 1.3 is a nearly-independent "wildlife" system. I only ever use 2 lenses on it. If anything went wrong, I could replace it with, say, a Nikon body and a lens or two.
