Has anyone used an M42 helios 35mm f/2.8 on a 5dc? I've had problems with old wide angle M42 lenes not clearing the mirror and would like to know if this one suffers the same problem because one's come up at a decent price and I might take a chance on it.

Hey, gang!

I don't know how many of you are keeping up with all the hoopla about the 5D3, the 1DX, and the Nikon D800 -- people are getting all psyched out about things, it's pretty entertaining...:)!

Anyway, one thing that is only getting a bit of attention is the fact that a new version of the Canon Raw software Digital Photo Professional (DPP) is getting ready to be released.

Now most updates of DPP are pretty minor, but this version has some special and interesting things! It incorporates the new features of the 5D3 into the actual Raw processing, including an interesting utility that can make noticeable improvements in lens corner softness, but what has more recently caught my interest is the fact that the 5D3 as a built-in 3-shot HDR function, and the new version of DPP will offer that for out-of-camera Raw shots producing fairly "basic" HDRs, but I've seen some samples of both the in-camera HDRs and then earlier this evening one of our members who has an "early release" posted a quick example.

Since this will work on Raw files that are not 5D3/1DX files, well, guess what? If it is quick, simple and effective, it could be way cool! I haven't done HDR for quite some time, I've been just settled into a Lightroom workflow and HDR has been to me a hassle, but since I do play with DPP a lot, well, hey, time to play!

Just thought I'd give you all a heads-up!

You might check this thread where the new version is being checked out and discussed:

Thanks for sharing, Tony.
But no, personally I'm not about the latest and greatest.
My parents bought me a brand new MPV, sold it and bought an 1985 Merc and an 1990 Merc. They bought my sister a shiny 500D, sold it and bought a used 50D, now I just bought a 5D.
Why am I going backwards :rolleyes:
Sorry for the OOT, thanks for indulging me :oops:

Cheers! :D

thanks for posting that, it doesn't mention the helios 35/2.8 from what i could see. but anything wider than 55mm seems to be a bit hit and miss, on my 30d though it'll be cool so i'll probably still buy it :)

Heh! Yeah, I'm content with my 5DC:)!

But you did catch the good news, that the new features of DPP should work with our 5DC Raw files, right?

this is roughly a 50% crop of the original image! all this talk of 5d3's is wasted on me tbh when the 5dc still does pretty much everything i want of it.

At the cost of 2-3 times larger files, if I'm not mistaken?

That's for the lens correction feature -- it actually does enlarge the CR2 file. I'd imagine the HDR will just result in a tiff or jpeg, or something if you don't Convert and Save, but I don't know what yet! 'Course HDRs from other software can result in pretty huge files before you convert them to a "regular" file.

Anyway, I enjoy "playing" with DPP, and I'm hoping that the HDR will be simpler, quicker and less hassle with the other apps that are out there!

Haha yeah simpler and less hassle are the qualities I look for in any tool I use ;)
BTW you are one of the reason I bought my 5Dc.
Not regretting it a bit this far. :D

Hey, wow, how far back was that? I've been a happy 5DC shooter since back in '07, but I believe this thread (the original version) started in '08!
