We all know the shortcomings of the Canon ET 86 lens hood .. a bit bulky, and with a not too solid bayonet attachment system. Many event shooters leave their hoods off because of these two characteristics.

So I did a bit of research and found that the Nikon HN 28 (for the Nikon 80-200 2.8) has a 77mm screw in thread, which I strongly prefer over the bayonet. Received this morning from B&H (about $40) and couldn't be more pleased .. solid attachment, smaller size, very lightweight, and made of metal.

If you prefer to keep your Canon hood but have found it becoming a bit loose it's because the tabs inside the hood have worn down .. Canon does not sell these tabs but you can buy a substitute hood on eBay and simply exchange the tabs.

Canon hoods and caps suck!

I use a 67mm generic round screw-in hood for my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and I use Chinese eBay center pinch caps for all my lenses.

I just got a generic screw-in hood for my 70-200 as well. Not sure I like it though.

I have screw-in metal hoods for all my lenses except the ultra-wide (not practical) and 400 (has the built-in hood) and I much prefer them for most uses. My ultra-wide and 400 both have 77mm filter threads, so I've used 72mm hoods on the other lenses (via adapters in some cases) which have a 77mm thread on the front, meaning I can share the 77mm CPL between them all if needed. All my metal hoods (and centre-pinch caps) are cheap on ebay and are of good quality.
