Wow, this thread has been going for almost 6 years now! For the third time I'm going to own this brick of a lens, I hate to admit it (because I prefer primes) but this is a darn useful lens and when you've got a good copy it's really excellent.

This is my workhorse lens. :-)

If I had to describe it as an animal, it would be a Shire Horse.

Big, not too fast, but dependable...

Same here, never wanted to sell it since it works so well. It stays on my 1D MK2N. It's heavy and I think that turns some users away. The lens weighs as much as their camera When I purchased this lens years ago I started with a 30D of course it felt unbalanced until I added a motor drive.

I was not THAT happy when I first got my 24-70L. I did shoot almost everything within the 2.8 and 4.0 range. But yesterday I did shoot at some higher apertures and the pictures aree eeeextremely sharp within 4.0 and 5.6. But those are not the apertures where I bought this lense for.

I'm kind of the opposite mindset right now, I will definitely be using this lens stopped down a lot because my primes are designed for low light speed.

Naturally if I find myself shooting in a situation where I have to shoot at f/2.8 with the lens then I will do so without hesitation, but I imagine it will probably live at f/4-5.6 quite a bit ;)

personally my favourite lens and I'm still wondering if I should take it overseas for travel because the image quality is so good.
