So, I struck a deal with my daughter - she could get some GIR related clothes, if she let me practice outdoor fill flash....

I still find the face a little underexposed in 1,2,4,5 I can be corrected if I am wrong. Also were you using a speedlite or a pop-up flash?

I was using a 580ex. I was going to use a reflector, but it was just something quick

Ambient exposure looks okay--I'm just not seeing much flash here. I think you needed more, especially for #2 (it looks like almost pure ambient). Were you shooting with the flash off-camera ?

Summary: photos come off as underexposed only because you didn't use enough flash to light your subject.

The Flash was on camera, but I think I should have dialed up the Flash a little more. It was a learning experience and realizing how much I need to dial up the flash when using the 135 against the sun.

Thanks for the input.

3 and 6 have an extra crease line in the skin, just under the chin, that is particularly unflattering. When posing her, have her lift her head a little more.

^agreed with above. I'll add: always make a joke about this in a way that emphasizes that everyone has this issue; ladies and goyls can be particularly sensitive about these sorts of things. Alternatively, just say: 'tilt your head up a little please ?"

In looking at the photos again I see what you mean. Thank you for the input. Would I have been better using a reflector instead and using the sun to reflect back on her?
