I was toying with the idea of getting a 300mm or 400mm. I hear that Canon won't fix the 300 NON IS due to it being old. Was also looking at a 400mm 5.6, but not sure on either. Or even a 300 f/4, which is much cheaper... I'm so confused...

Pros and cons? (or should this be in the Lens thread?)

Ken

If you have the cash get the IS version of the 300/2.8.

However if your funds are limited then if you can get on Non IS version they are still fabulous lenses.

I have one which is 20 years old and is battered and bruised but flip it still works a treat.

Yea, I don't have the cash for the IS version.. :(

Actually, looking at the Sell thread, the Non-IS is a little high too... that's why I as asking about the f/4 version as well. I would really only use it for outdoor sports and motorsports, so being f/4 won't be so bad. and it seems to be $1,000 cheaper.. :)

Lol... not sure of the conversion, but there is one for sale in the Sell forum for $1,900US. Don't think I can get there anytime soon... And I don't even care about IS or Non-IS, I would be using a monopod with it anyway.

£1300 is about $2063

So I reckon if the $1900 is in good condition then it's worth it.

I know the IS versions sell for over $4000.

Whilst the IS is not needed for sports it's more that the newer can be repaired and is probably a bit quicker to focus.

Here's some taken with the 1D3 and 300/2.8 non is. http://photoshotz.co.uk …33124/h3fb694bb#h3fb694bb (external link)

Nice shots! We'll see. Maybe I'll save a little more, but baseball and outdoor sports season is coming up, so not sure how much longer I can wait...

Ken - trust me it's worth saving for. Go in to your shed/loft and find some old stuff to put on FleaBay..

It takes a 1.4x extender well. AF does slow a bit but still works well.

I live on the upper East Coast of the U.S., and the state I live in is Rhode Island (RI). The capital city is Providence, and East Providence is its own city to the east of Providence. Nice place, especially in the summertime, not so much in the winter.. :(

Any serial number after 546561. If it's below that, and used, ask the seller if he got the fixes done. If not, it should still be a free fix from Canon.

Even now the fix is free?I thought that it had to be under warranty, but thats nice from Canon.Have you guys had any issues with AF after the fix or with a unit not affected by the issue?
