I agree with Rick. I'd love to see all of them in color.

In my opinion there is not enough separation between the main subject and the background so everything blends together.

If your flash power is way up and you need to shoot at f8 or f11 to get your exposure that would cause the lack of separation.

Try lowering your flash power and shooting at f4 or f3.2 assuming you are using a f2.8 lens.

The shallower depth of field will help with subject/background separation and 'clean up' your images, or at least make the main subject more pronounced.

Cool shots, I LOVE roller derby. A growing sport here in Australia.
I agree that I think thye colour works best, but they are all just lots of fun!

+1 for the color version...

Too many similar tones throughout each of the B&W shots. The competitors get lost in the jumble of spectators.

Cool action though! :D

As requested here are a few in color.

Ya, the ladder thing is quite common around here. I like to shoot from a low angle on the outside though.

I hadn't noticed the ladder  I don't know of a league in the UK that allows you shoot from the centre at all, never mind with a ladder :)

All shots are at f/4 to try to keep the entire pack in focus.

Yeah, I saw that when I looked at some of the color versions from the link you posted. So I guess my comment is mostly useless. Sorry, I just thought the main subject needed a little bit more separation from the background to really 'bring them forward.'

A couple of years ago there was a guy that posted some really tight roller derby shots all done with a 300 f2.8 and the images really had some "POP" but I can't for the life of me remember his name or find the link to his images.

Oh well, my comment was just about more blur to the background and to get that you might not get everyone in the pack in focus so, once again my comment is useless.

So I guess never mind.

I have nothing of value to add, other than to say that the color shot you posted is awesome.
