Today was my first day out in good light. I will have to say I was very happy with the results.

odd but my resize photos seemed to be compressed. The full res photos are extremely sharp.

Finally had a chance to take some shots with this lens and view them in Lightroom. All I can say is WOW. Photo quality blows away my 24-105. Here's a sample and 100% crop (approx) - no sharpening.

I have a 24-105 coming this week as a new walk around. I love my 100-400 but blows the 24-105 away? I have used the 105 before and found it just as good to be honest Are you comparing both at ~100mm here?

I posted these in the birds forum, but I figure they're welcome here as well. Shot with a 7D, 400mm, f/8, 1/1600 sec (first one); 1/2000 sec (second one). Taken from the deck of a cruise ship in Galveston harbor. I like the ability of the 7D AI Servo to track birds in flight.

I think he must have a sub-standard 24-105. I've had both lenses for several years, and whilst I love the 100-400 and prefer to use it than I do the 24-105, there's precious little difference in IQ between the two. I might also add that although I've read quite a few times that the IS on the 100-400 is old and not very good, I've never had the sightest problem with it. Clear and crisp images always, even though most are handheld, many are at 400, and quite a few are with slow shutter speeds.

That's what I was thinking Peter. I pick my 24-105 up tomorrow, (missed delivery driver today) and hopefully it's a "good one"! The one I have previously used was as good in IQ as the 100-400, but, like you I know I will prefer using the 100-400 as I just find I like shooting more in the long range than the short ones, obv has a lot to do with the kinds of things I usually like to shoot, but I need a better walk around and the 17-70 sigma I have is crapoly (dodgy copy)

Just an aside, for the first time the other day I put on a B&W 2 stop ND on to the 100-400 to get some RC planes at slower shutter speeds in the bright sun at normal aperture settings, and the focus HATED it and pretty much struggled and hunted for a lot of the shots. Having said that I think it's more closer to 3 stop when I compared exposures, so I can't be too hard on the old girl! Esp with tiny RC planes whizzing by at 100 mph at what was effectively 3 stops amount of light less to focus with!

My 24-105 was always good, but for a long time I wasn't convinced by it. Then I did some objective comparisons with other lenses and realised just how good it actually was. Last year I travelled from Belize to Boston with too much in my hand baggage. I carried the 5D and 24-105 separately but in the same bag. At some point the bag must have had a knock, as although everything looked fine it wouldn't autofocus - just hunted perpetually. There's one decent camera shop in Boston and I took the ensemble in to them. After a few trials with different lenses and bodies we confirmed it was the lens, so it was sent off to Canon. Cost me somewhere around $140 and they said they replaced a PCB, but the AF is now miraculous. It just snaps into focus instantly, even in poor light - far better than it ever was when it was new. I wonder whether they didn't just repair it, but upgraded it to a current spec from whatever it had been (it's five years old). Makes me wonder about sending my other lenses in for "service" and recalibration, not that I'm aware of any problems with any of them.
