I'm hoping a 5D3 owner can tell me: is there a noticeable difference in viewfinder size/brightness between the MK III and MK II?

Thanks!

snakedoc wrote in post #14156754 (external link)
I rented one for the weekend. The viewfinder is MUCH better than the 5DII's. 100% coverage now, so what you see is what you shoot.

Adam Jones wrote in post #14157044 (external link)
Thanks. I'm surprised it's that much better! Coming from an XT->50D->5DII I was pretty happy with the Mark II's viewfinder.

it's not "much" better. I can't really comment on brightness because I don't have 2 of the same lenses, and I also have the E-s screen in my 5Dii (the one for fast lenses and showing thin DOF, whichever that is). But! Hold both up to your eyes like (the weirdest) pair of glasses ever. Line the 2 images up, then you can really see the differences in size. It's not much at all. I DO think it's brighter, but that could also be my screen difference. The fact the 5Diii's viewfinder is 100% makes it SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 5Dii's IMHO, but it's not much bigger to me. Again, bright is hard to say. The grid and level are very nice though. I find it's harder to see the black outlines of the AF points in this one -vs- the 5D2 since it's the new LCD...

So yes, it's better, especially the 100% aspect, but it's no where near enough of a change to consider it a reason to upgrade.

Just a quick question - this MK III looks great and I'd love to own one but - I already own a MK 2 and I only shoot with manual focus Zeiss lenses.. Is there really much point in upgrading? The autofocus capabilities really wont help me and the MK II is still an amazing camera IMO..

Just wondered if there's anyone else upgrading from MK 2 to 3?

Here is a panoramic I took in Pittsburgh this weekend... Sadly the light was not that great (would of been if we did not get this stupid cold front... I miss the hot weather already!). But it was this or nothing. First time taking the cable car up to the top of the mountain, it was great! Pittsburgh still is probably the most beautiful city in my eyes. Too bad the light was not better though for these shots. I will be going back for sure at dusk in the future! These are just merged together from JPEG's, although I have the RAW files. Must wait for LR4 :p

Playing with just the JPEG files is extremely impressive though... Pushing shadows under bridges and such, detail comes right back no banding at all. These files are so much more forgiving then any other past camera I have used. Those who are DR freaks will be impressed! Link below can be viewed at full size, which is quite large.

At full size that is amazing. bw!

The only thing that doesn't do this for me, is that blurred ship in the middle, maybe someone with with a fetish for blurred ships would love it...I don't:lol:

IMHO no, unless you need/want the cleaner high ISOs. There are a lot of nice little changes, but w/o AF being included probably not enough. 100% viewfinder and 6fps maybe?

oh, yeah, I only processed that one because I have the identical one with the 5Dii. Simultaneous shutter pressing. I have a ton more to wade through w/o the ship that I'll edit and share later. :)

all of my shots here so far are shot with the nifty fifty 1.8. as for AF? it's quicker than on my 5DII but then again, i can't really remember. It hunts in low light so it takes a bit depending on what you're AFing on.

I personally would've gone with some glass first but I suppose if I never liked swapping lenses in the first place, the 50/1.8 permanently adhered to such a camera would suffice.
