My el-cheapo lighting gear turned up today - first quick play with it - shoot through umbrella above camera right, slight fill in from the window camera left. It's hard to take a self portrait with the 60D without looking at the Live View screen .. makes me look cross-eyed :-P

I resisted the urge to air brush myself .. although with my rugged handsomeness I obviously don't need it anyway *cough*

Very impressed with the noise level at ISO 800 though.

Edit: looks a tad over-sharpened - look ok in Lightroom, must be the output sharpening over cooking it.

looks pretty good beepcakes; usually I don't use output sharpening if I'm not gonna print the image but I don't really understand the 3 stages of using sharpness..how'd you get the 2 different split background ? O_O

Thanks for the comments :-) The background is actually a slightly textured wallpaper - the texture closest to the flash just seems to be more visible because of the shadow. I'd like to claim that was intentional :-P

The stuff that arrived today was a Konig light stand (£10), a cheapo umbrella / flash holder (£5) and a cheap 90cm shoot through umbrella (£6). Combined with my cheap and (hopefully!) cheerful YN-565EX it a nice cheapo starter strobist setup .. it's nice being able to adjust the power of the flash from the camera itself.

The shot above was at ISO800, f4.0, 1/125 with the flash on manual 1/64th power.

We had a great sky tonight with lots of colour, here is one that's had a quick tweak in LR.
I'm really feeling the urge for a wide lens at the moment.

Wife and I are heading to Chicago this week with another couple and I want to bring my camera but I'm a bit nervous about theft. Should I leave the 70-200 at home so I don't have that "Hey look at what I have to steal" vibe following me around, or am I worrying too much?

Insurance! It costs me about $10 per 1000 insured through State Farm, which also has my home owners and auto policies.

What good is your camera if you are afraid to take it places? Where in the city are you going?
