What were you trying to bounce it off?

Outside like this it is a pointless modification to the light. Well... other than sending light off into space rather than to your subject.

An umbrella with a 580exII would have worked much better in that situation correct?

nothing at all fancy, just playing around with my son who turned 9 months old the other day.

bare 580 ex II to camera right, bounced with home-made bounce card.

Not sure if this is a people/muppet-only thread, but I was proud of this attempt (gelled 580EX II to camera left). Apologies in advance if I'm not in the right place. I guess it's kinda lame compared to the awesome stuff I see here, but I'm a large format shooter so these kinds of things are still a novelty for me.

Anyway, >100% crop here. Thnx, bye.

QUOTED IMAGE

Pretty fantastic shot, if you ask me.

except for the fact that it's straight out of a tutorial and really overdone.

/grin :D I think it's an excellent shot, for what it is. Most people honestly don't realize how difficult it can be to reliably get a drop like that after literally dozens of attempts.

Not necessarily better. Different.

The bare flash with or without the Sto-Fen is a small light source and will give you the hard light with the shadows like you see in your frame. Switching to an umbrella would have made for a much larger and, as a result, softer light.

As did I, I still have 100 water droplet shots nearly identical in a folder on my external.
