Just changed this lens to 17-40 f/4 because the best astronomy season is over and I need more versatility and I want to be abel to use filters with my uwa lens. Loved it so much which made this decision hard!

I feel like when shooting UWA, sometimes it just includes too much foreground for my purpose. Cropping to 16:9 helps the situation a bit.

The lack of a filter thread is a problem for landscapes!

Just got the lens in.

- It's super well-build. Focusing ring is smoooth!
- Haven't checked out the scale yet.
- Dof is incredibly big (widest lens I've shot with to date)
- It's so WIIIIIDE. Unreal... And that's on crop. I don't even wanna know how wide it is on FF. IQ is super as far as I can tell. I've just taken some indoor shots, but I'll be trying it out outside soon!

I'm trying to decide between this lens and the 8mm version. I plan on getting a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens at some point, probably before I even move into the fisheye lens realm. Do you guys think I should just go for the 8mm version since the Tokina 12-24mm would already cover the 14mm focal length?

I guess it's important when 'some point' is. If it's in a few months I'd go for the fish-eye. Personally I hate fisheye's, but it seems you don't. If I were you I'd get either the Samyang 14mm or Tokina before getting the fisheye. As far as the FoV goes: Do you need the zoom? Or do you need the f/2.8 the Samyang offers? I don't know anything of the IQ produced by the tokina...

Well on my list of lenses to get, the Tokina is probably at the top, just because of the zoom and I like the focal range it offers. I suppose the Tokina would be my way to determine where I would go from there - whether I want to go wider with the 8mm or go tighter with the Rokinon 35mm.

I would mostly be looking to shoot portraits and cars.

What camera are you shooting on? Personally I find 24mm as the longest end way too short for either cars or portraits - on crop or FF. I think you would be better off with the Rokinon...

I'm currently shooting on a Rebel XT but I'm trying to sell it or trade up to a T3i.
