Diane,
I had the same concerns as you for a long time. There really are some good people on here and I've learned a lot on here.
Some people are jerks and can't help themselves. They were born with cameras in hand and never had to learn anything.
Be tough, ignore them and enjoy the rest of what the site has to offer!

Well, I get flak on this forum too but I keep coming back for more. :p Probably why I only have 260 odd posts since 2006!

Anyway, if you have to ask a question, ask it and brace yourself.

I sure hope Diane at least is lurking; to see that everybody here isn't like the few who make newbies feel uncomfortable posting.

Diane, if you're lurking, you now see that there are many people here who are willing, nay, anxious to help, and without attitude.

We were all noobs once.

I hope the "Rebel" in your profile name is in reference to the type of camera you use and not pertaining to your character. ;/

I take pictures, I lift heavy things put them down and repeat.

Some folk on this forum & indeed other forums have a short memory & forget that they were beginners too at some stage. I wouldn't delete my account on POTN. Most people do try to help, but you will always find some people that believe that they "know all" & are not willing to share their knowledge. Maybe it's their fear of being shown up as being "not so knowledgable" that they ridicule people who do ask for advice. I find most people WILL try to answer your questions in a friendly & helpful manner.

most of the time i dont feel i belong here.. i try my best to understand the works of taking good pictures, but get very few comments or suggestions on how to improve.

to those of you who do comment or help thank you so much.. it really motivates me to keep my camera. many times i have wanted to just " chuck' this whole picture taking stuff, and sell my T3i and the lens.. i wont ever be able to afford L lens ( I only have one) but its not in the cards to get anymore..... I have a nice SX40HD i am enjoying.

I will continue to 'lurk' but wont be posting much anymore.. not that i did anyways..

To be honest, how can we teach over the internet? The way some people tell things on here, ok, some are over the top, but there are people who don't know how to teach people and may come across as down right rude. I personally wouldn't take it seriously. It is over the internet. If there are trolls, why are people baiting themselves to the trolls? The more you or anyone appears upset, the more you give kudos for the trolls to carry on

Most online communities have a culture, a set of unwritten rules. After a few bumps in the road, we usually learn to adapt.

I remember one of my earliest posts here. I didn't realize that when someone started a thread, the idea was to discuss their topic. I had yet to read the term "hijack your thread". I added a photo (without thought, I have to admit) and was told very clearly to "get your inferior photograph off this site" plus a few more suggestions. I quickly learned I could delete a post.

Bottom line? I was wrong. I didn't know I was wrong at the time but I learned. I thoroughly enjoy POTN. I've learned so much and still have so much to learn.

I was on a forum where the admin and mods literally allowed an user to carry on with their bad nasty behaviour, because they thought that user was "funny". Not obviously this one, thankfully
