I'm not sure how long you've been into photography but me personally I don't give damn who's looking at me. I'm there to shoot a photograph. If you've ever banged a lens against a door or dropped one while changing lenses outdoors you'd want that hood on for protection.I've taken my 24-70 all over the country with no problems. If anything the amateurs think you're a pro when they see the 24-70 with a hood.;)

well I've only been doing photography for about 40 years now but I had never travelled overseas which is what I'm doing this year, Singapore and UK. Want to take my DSLR and love this lens and was thinking it would cover enough for me to take just this one lens (Id be taking my X100 as well). The last thing I want to do is stick out in a crowd or be seen as a pro either. I have never used any of my lenses without the hoods attached and was just wondering how much flare etc the lens attracts. Have not had a chance to get out and test it lately due to work commitments

Not sure about Singapore, but in the UK, most people will consider you a pro when you whip out the L. For most general travel photography that isn't a problem as such, but for candid street photography it's too conspicuous. But as already mentioned, I'd rather have the attention than risk damage to the lens from a knock or suffer from unintentional flare by not having the hood on.

Take the lens - it should cover you for nearly all your travel needs on full frame.

Agreed, it's the most useful range on full frame and an amazing zoom to work with.. Versatility and quality packed together..

Thanks, I will stick to the X100 for street stuff, use the DSLR for scenery :-)
