Help salvage an Easter photo

Easter afternoon, the kids (my daughter and nephew) were out in the front yard, and someone grabbed a camera. The kids posed. I had my camera with me and banged out a couple, despite the splotchy light. I didn't have high hopes, but when I saw my daughter's expression in one photo, I had to see if I could salvage it.

Here's the original:

Splotchy light. Distracting, busy background. Ugly fence she decided to hold on to. etc etc etc. So I cropped in tight to do what I could to get rid of the background, and then went to work trying to fix the lighting. All edits have been in LR so far.

I pushed the recovery all the way to the right, to cut the highlights, and then used fill to bring up the shadows. The result was my nephew having a green hue to his face. I'm guessing it's because my daughter has a lot of reflected pink on her face, while my nephew is getting green from the grass and tree. I played with the green/magenta and blue/yellow to try to mitigate it, but to me it still feels a little green. I need opinions.

I'm guessing that to fix it, I'm going to have to mask off his face, and just adjust color there, because if I pushed it too far using just LR, my daughter's face got too pink.

I'm looking for any other suggestions as well. Did I crop in too close?

Honestly... From the point of view that the picture was taken I think the picture is fine the way you have it. Now if they were looking at you, the image might be worth more work.

Maybe get a copy of the picture from the other camera and do some post processing?

Cute kids.

You're really getting worked up over a photo that doesn't really have anything "wrong" with it, per se.

Of course this isn't a stellar portrait that's going to win you praise or anything, but as a photo of your daughter and your nephew it's fine, and I'd say you're over analyzing it for flaws.

The only thing I'll address is your complaint of the green in your nephews face looks like it could simply be corrected by adding some contrast and saturation, as both of theirs skin tones are looking quite dull.

The other camera (my sister's) is film, and the photos will likely be processed by Walgreens, or some such. ;-)a

I don't see a major problem here that couldn't be fixed with a little WB adjustment and...using the clone tool on that blob in the upper right, add some shrubbery.

Here they are with a warmer tone and some exposure/contrast adjustment in LR4. Really sweet picture. :D

The CS6 beta ACR has nice highlight recovery that's very effective.
