Excellent shots Gary!

Quality is not good but I like how this turned out. It's breeding season, I am checking myself out!

Great job on the owl, Gary! Looks like he's staring right at you. Care to share your post processing? Shot around Ottawa?

Not anywhere near the standard of most of the shots on here, but I quite liked how it turned out

I posted these earlier on this forum, but I hope I'm not exceeding the bounds of propriety for posting them again here. Brown pelican, Galveston harbor. 7D, 100-400L.

Everyone, these a great. I have a question for any one of you. I have tons of photos of birds, but all sitting on tree limbs, bird feeders and bird baths. What is the shutter speed needed to catch a bird in flight and keep all the detail in the feathers? I'm shooting with a Canon 30D and 70-300 lens 4.5-5.6.
Thanks all for your answers. Again, all of your photos are great.

Howdy - I had that lens and first of all - see which gives you the sharpest photos - is it at f/8 or f/9? for you to determine... for mine it was f/9. And for that matter - f/8 or f/9 with give you the desirable depth of field you need also...

as for shutter speed it frankly depends on the current bird in your sites - and how fast they flap their wings. On a nice clear day with lots of light - begin with 1/1600th - that should capture most anything while keeping your ISO down....
However, I have found as have others that smaller ducks like Buffleheads - need 1/4000th/sec or so to freeze their wings including the tips - assuming you can get a solid AF lock on them in the first place... ;)

and you may already know to set your center focus point versus auto-select, and AI Servo. Happy Hunting!
;)
