Did you have another suggestion for the body and a better lens for around $1350?

Do you mind used?

Canon USA has refurb 60d for 800 and t3i for 600 (with 18-55 Is II for $679!) so you could have 550-750 for glass, that not too bad, especially if you consider tamron or the likes. Shoot if you got the t3i kit at sub 700 you could pick up used70-200 f4 L as well. Would definitely shop the forums to maximize your buck.

A good option, that thing stayed on my camera for a year and I got great cardio ;)

I can spend up to that $1350 spot.

Have you considered a refurb? You can save quite a bit of money, and/or get much better gear in like new condition that way.

First, there's the Canon Loyalty Program. Here's a rather lengthy thread on the subject: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=948785

Read the first couple of pages, and then go to the end - and specifically read the pages surrounding page 231.

Short version - Canon will sell you a refurb, for 20% off their refurb prices. You have to send them back a non-functional camera, though you can pick one up cheaply (say under $20) from a number of sources - look in the sell section of the forum.

Included in the program, apparently, are some decent lenses (see page 231) also at 20% off the refurb. If true, and if in stock, that would price a 50mm/1.4 at ~$255.

Here's the link to CUSA's refurbs - http://shop.usa.canon.com …gory_10051_10051_-1_29252 (external link)

Quick math:
60D kit (18-135) = $1,039.20 - 20% = $831.36 + tax and shipping.
60D body only = $799 - 20% = $639.20 + tax and shipping.

If the lens deal isn't included, as noted above, you could pick up a 60d and a 50mm 1.4 for $894.40 (again, plus tax and shipping).

You can also buy a refurb from Adorama here (external link) for $969 - with a 1 year warranty from adorama. Tax is dependent on location.

Day 103 - So, my main drive which is 5yrs old (like the one that bit the dust a couple of weeks ago) was about full. Soooooo..... CS5 loads so much more quickly, now. I now have 4.5TB total storage on my photo/email/web PC. The green (Day 91) drive is reserved for backups.

Those greens are useless. They run at 5400 RPM until they detect enough data requests and then ramp up to 7200...while they do that, the drive can't send data, so things that might be requesting data like your music player aren't getting fed and it will loop in the buffer and sound like a demented record. The one I had the spindle failed after maybe 8 months, made a horrible whine.

I have 2 1TB Scorpio blacks, a 120GB SSD (you should see lightroom load on that...), an older 500gb USB attached external and a 2TB NAS.. and automatic offsite backups.

Thank you all for your advice. I'll keep checking back for more suggestions and make my decision sometime in middle May... my birthday is the 19th. I've already checked to see if any of this meets the WAF (wife acceptance factor) and everything looks like a go.

Many of the accessories/gadgets I purchased for the G12 will apply here, so that is a relief.

The green drive is for storing drive images and SD card dumps. Nothing more. For it's purpose, it's perfect. And it was a whopping $130.

60D though Canon loyalty program = $700 (with taxes, shipping, etc...)
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX OS = $489 (see http://www.bhphotovideo.com …1_17_50mm_F2_8_EX_DC.html (external link))
Total = $1349, which leaves you $161, which is more than enough for a 50mm 1.8

That's the combination I currently shoot with, and I friggin love it.

Very cool. Question: I've always wondered how PP worked on time lapse stuff. Do you just process them all the same in a batch or something? Because I can see it messing up the "action" if you didn't.

You process each picture, one by one. LR and Photoshop makes it easy to edit in batch.

Dang sharp for getting a bird at 1/100th! (420mm!)

Gunna keep this lens a little longer now?

I was also suprised that I could handheld 1/100 at 420mm (672mm equivalent  ).

While it's a very great lens, I don't think I'll keep it. It'll say too much un-unsed in the bag for nothing.

By not pick up a broken point & shoot then take advantage of the clp trade in program? You get a great price and a discount while having more money for a better lens or two.
